Patronal Festival

The Birth of John the Baptist

A Prayer for our Patronal Festival

Lord God,
John proclaimed your Son as the Lamb of God
and John’s disciples followed Jesus:
help us to follow him also,
and by our words and deeds
to bring our families and friends closer to you.
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Swindon Youth for Christ

We are delighted to be welcoming Dave Clarke, Director of Swindon Youth for Christ (SYFC) to our 10am service on Sunday 23rd June (which is also our Patronal Festival). Dave will be preaching for us and sharing some stories about the encouraging work that they are engaged in. We will be working with SFYC in the new Deanery Secondary School, which opens in Wichelstowe on 4th September. Please pray that this will be an exciting and fruitful partnership for the Gospel.

For some years, SYFC has been developing “LUSH”, a course on sex and relationships which is used as part of schools’ personal, social and health education curriculum. Recently, in addition to the tried and tested material, they have added a new session looking at the effects of pornography. The programme recognises that young people need safe spaces to talk about these important life issues.

Please pray that more schools will invite SYFC to provide these courses for them, and that young people will be transformed for the better by this work.

Church Finances

We want to continue to bring the good news of the Gospel to our community, to be good news for our community; however, this costs money. Towards the end of June we will be providing some further information and detail about our financial position. Please do take time to read and reflect on this and consider what response you might make.

The Bible Course

We’re continuing to explore the bible the BIG story of God’s salvation plan for the world. Three groups are meeting:

Monday 10am at 11 St John Road

Wednesday 7:30pm at 12 Artis Ave

Thursday 2pm at The Vicarage
Don’t forget to do your daily bible readings!

IMPORTANT! ‘Praying in’ the Deanery School.

On Saturday July 20th the Deanery School are hosting a prayer day for members of the public, involving a tour of the school, a Prayer Walk and lunch! The day will start at 9:15 with a tour and finish at 1:30. This is our opportunity to show we care, to ask God to bless the new building and everyone who uses it and, of course, to satisfy our curiosity.

You do need to register, so please Google ‘prayer day for the Deanery CE Academy’ and follow the link in the first search result to ‘eventbrite’ where you can sign-up.  See you there!

Spring Harvest 2020

We’re hoping that as many people as possible will join us at Spring Harvest next year (Minehead week 2: 13th to 17th April 2020). The theme for 2020 is ‘the Acts church today’. There are brochures at the back of church and also some available from Keith Basset and Phill Harrison. There is a range of accommodation to suit various tastes and budgets and you can either go self-catering or fully catered. Because this is the first year that we’ve really promoted this as a church, it will be easier if people can book individually, rather than organising a group booking. Please book your own accommodation and be aware that booking opens at 8am on Wednesday 26th June. Certain types of accommodation tend to go very quickly (single rooms in particular).

Martina’s Ration Challenge – update

This week Martina Lewis has been eating the rations of a Syrian refugee to mark refugee week and show refugees that we stand with them, not against them. Please consider sponsoring Martina. All proceeds go the work of Concern UK.

Pray and Bless Wroughton and Wichelstowe

Last Tuesday evening around 20 of us set out from the Church Hall to walk around Wroughton and Wichelstowe in small groups, praying as we went. It was great to be able to take time to pay prayerful attention to the people and places in our community and to ask for God’s blessing on them. We meet again at 7:30pm on Tuesday 16th July.

Date for your diary!

This autumn we will be having a ‘Parish Weekend at home’. Please keep the weekend of 12th and 13th October free. We have a guest speaker booked and hope to include plenty of opportunities for fellowship and laughter as well as growing in our relationship with God.

Holiday Club craft

We need corner yogurt containers and small glass jars (mustard size) for the children to use in some of the craft at holiday Club, so if you have any please save them for us. Any left over will be recycled.

Teresa’s Ordination

Teresa Townsend will be ordained on Saturday June 29th in Bristol. The coach will leave from the Ellendune (outside surgery) at 1.45pm. Cost is £10, includes driver tip. Please pay either Jean Ford or Ross Fralley. There are still a couple of seats left.

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Swindon Youth for Christ

For some years, SYFC has been developing “LUSH”, a course on sex and relationships which is used as part of schools’ personal, social and health education curriculum. Recently, in addition to the tried and tested material, they have added a new session looking at the effects of pornography. The programme recognises that young people need safe spaces to talk about these important life issues.

Please pray that more schools will invite SYFC to provide these courses for them, and that young people will be transformed for the better by this work.

This week please also pray for:-

  • Swindon Youth for Christ
  • For the family and friends of Jamie & Kirsty as they are married in Church next Saturday
  • PCC Meeting taking place this week
  • Teresa & family as she prepares for her ordination on Saturday at Bristol Cathedral
  • Our Ministry Team
  • We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently especially Sister Danes. We pray for all who mourn the loss of loved ones.
