Celebrating God’s Creation

A prayer for God’s guidance

Almighty Lord and everlasting God,
we ask you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments;
that through your most mighty protection,
both here and ever,
we may be preserved in body and soul;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Sunday 29th September by Ann Hoare in memory of her husband, Allen on his birthday who sadly passed away August 2017; on Friday 4th October in memory of Desmond Ray who would have been 100 on this day from his children, grandchildren and great grandsons Toby and James; on Saturday 5th October by Janet Edmonds in memory of her husband, Roy Edmonds.

Tearfund

TODAY we are delighted to welcome Revd David Morell, who will be preaching and speaking about the work of Tearfund. Tearfund are one of our mission partners, whom we support financially and pray for as part of our regular cycle of prayer. They have been doing some really good advocacy work highlighting the impact of pollution and climate change on the world’s poorest people, so we hope that David will be able to offer us a global perspective on our current theme of creation care.

Their latest campaign urges Coca-Cola, Nestle, PepsiCo and Unilever to tackle plastic pollution by taking responsibility for the plastic waste that they create. To sign the petition go to: https://www.tearfund.org/about_you/action/rubbish/

Harvest

Our harvest festival service is on Sunday 6th October. We will be joined by Bishop Eridard and Mama Jane from our link diocese of Luweero in Uganda. Bishop Eridard is visiting the UK as part of the celebration of the 50 year old link between the Diocese of Bristol and the Province of Uganda. We hope that Bishop Eridard and Mama Jane will be able to offer us a perspective on harvest that is different from our own experience. There will be an opportunity to meet and talk with them over coffee after the service and later over lunch at 11 St John Road.

We will be collecting non-perishable items for The Filling Station as usual.

Visit from Bishop Viv

Bishop Viv will be coming to visit us here in Wroughton and Wichelstowe at 10am on Sunday the 20th October. We look forward to welcoming her as she continues to get to know the Diocese.

The Deanery CE Secondary School

Please continue to pray for the staff and students of the new Deanery CE Secondary School in Wichelstowe as they settle into the school’s first term ever. Please pray that a supportive and safe culture is quickly established and that firm friendships are made among staff and pupils alike.

As part of our commitment to this new Church of England school in our parish we will be holding a short service of Morning Prayer in the school chapel every Monday at 9am during term time. Everyone is welcome to join us.

Parish weekend @ home 12th and 13th October – When you pray…

We will be staying at home for our parish weekend this year, using the church hall and church as our venues for getting together. This will keep costs down and hopefully enable as many people to join in as possible. There will be a special programme of sessions and activities on Saturday 12th, with the themes from Saturday carrying on into our regular Sunday services on October 13th.

We will be thinking about some of the things that Jesus said about prayer. Does he contradict himself when he tells people to pray on their own and in secret (Matt 6:6) and then later tells them to agree together in prayer (Matt 18:19)? Canon Roger Morgan will be our guest speaker for the weekend. Roger is the director of the Mathetes Trust, an organisation that promotes Christian discipleship. We hope that you will find the sessions engaging and varied, with plenty of opportunities for us to get to know one another better.  Booking forms are now available (for catering purposes).

Celebrating all God’s gifts!

Our Harvest Supper will be on Saturday 12th October, 7.00pm in the Church Hall.

As well as celebrating God’s gift of a good harvest, we will also be celebrating one-another by showcasing our talents… So, if you might be able to recite a poem, sing a song, perform a sketch, tell a story (or a joke?) then get your thinking cap on and get rehearsing. This is part of our parish weekend, however we would love you to come and join us in the evening, even if you can’t manage the rest of the day on Saturday. This is a social event, so please think about inviting a friend, whether they come to church or not.  Helena Thomas is now collecting names for the entertainment!

Bible Study

There will be another opportunity to study Paul’s letter to the Romans in a small group meeting at 7.30pm on alternate Tuesdays. We will begin on  24th September  at 12 Artis Avenue. Please speak to Carolyn Kirk for further information.

Children’s Society Boxes

If you have a Children’s Society box that you’d like emptying please bring it to me in church by 13 October or give me a call on 07596001716 and I will call and collect it Thanks Carolyn Kirk

Ladies who Lunch

Please welcome

Alan Smith, who now lives in Frome was baptised in Wroughton Parish Church on 27th October 1939.  Alan and his wife, ‘Mary’ are planning to join us at 10.00am on Sunday, 27th October this year to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his baptism.

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Phil and Sylvie Good – our CMS mission partners

Phil and Sylvie Good, our CMS  mission partners in Beirut, continue to serve the churches there and minister to the Syrian refugees. They have asked that we pray:

  • that the recently arrived new volunteers from America will settle in and prove a blessing to the church
  • that Sylvie’s persistent cough will be healed
  • for peace between the different religions in Beirut and for political peace.

Knitting for Mission to Seafarers

This week I have sent off the latest batch of 35 scarves and 14 hats to the Mission to Seafarers. These items are given to seafarers who are recruited in warmer climes and find themselves without suitable clothing to keep warm as they sail into colder areas.

Thank you as always to our faithful band of knitters. If you would like to do some knitting there are patterns and wool in the box near the piano in church and if you can’t knit, but would like to support us by buying wool, this also can be left there. Further details from Janet 525856
