13th October 2019

A prayer to start the day

O, God, Grant us in all our duties your help;
in all our perplexities, your guidance;
in all our dangers, your protection;
and in all our sorrows, your peace.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
our body, and our blood,
our life and our nourishment. Amen.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit from 9th to 15th October in honour of babies

that have been lost too soon in the village as part of Baby Loss Awareness Week.

During this week the lights will be lit up in pink and blue in their memory.

The floodlighting has been organised by Ceri Crannis, whose baby daughter Poppy is buried in the churchyard.

The Church will be floodlit on Friday 18th October by Eric Pound in memory of his wife, Nora Pound.

Uganda Link

This year is the 50th anniversary of the link between the Church of Uganda and the Diocese of Bristol (https://www.bristol.anglican.org/Bristol_Uganda_50/). Celebrations have been taking place around the Diocese and we welcomed Bishop Eridard and Mama Jane from the Ugandan Diocese of Luweero for our Harvest Festival last week. Please pray for then this week as they prepare for their onward journeys.

Parish weekend @ home

TODAY we welcome Canon Roger Morgan, who will be speaking at all three services this Sunday.  A Fellow of Corpus Christi College and a retired Anglican priest with 24 years parish experience, Roger is the director of the Mathetes Trust, an organisation that promotes Christian discipleship (https://mathetestrust.org/) Roger will be building on the themes of prayer that we explored during the day on Saturday.

Visit from Bishop Viv

Bishop Viv will be coming to visit us here in Wroughton and Wichelstowe at 10am on Sunday the 20th October. We look forward to welcoming her as she continues to get to know the Diocese.

The 4 Let’s

  1. Let’s Talk 2. Let’s Pray
  2. Let’s Chat 4. Let’s Update

The aim of the 4 Let’s is to enhance communication within the community of Wroughton and Wichelstowe and amongst the parents of students at ‘The Deanery’ and break down invisible bounders.  As a CE Parish Church, we are expected to have a presence at the new CE School. We would like to be as inclusive as possible and the idea of the 4 Let’s where anybody is welcome to attend felt just right.

Please take a little leaflet with more detailed information on each of the Let’s.  If you feel you would like to find out more about it or love to get involved please feel free to approach me after the service or contact me afterward.

Pray and Bless Wroughton and Wichelstowe

Our next opportunity to come together to ‘pray and bless’ our community will be at 7:30 on Tuesday 15th October in the Church Hall. This month we will be led by our friends from Discovery Church.

Deanery School Prayers

Friends and supporters of the Deanery Academy in Wichelstowe usually meet to pray for the school on the first Monday evening after a Full Governing Board meeting. The next prayer meeting will be held in the Deanery School chapel at 7:30 THIS MONDAY (14th October). Owen Green from East Wichel Baptist church will be leading on this occasion.

The Big Quiz is back!

Tickets are now available for Tearfund’s Big Quiz on Saturday, 16th November at 7.00 pm in the Church Hall. £10 includes supper, but please bring your own beverages. Teams will be ideally 6-8 people, but we can be flexible. Tickets from Margaret Penfound or Carolyn Kirk.

Marion Durston

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Marion Durston, wife of Mike our previous Sexton and Church Warden for many years.  Mike and his family would like to thank you for your prayers and cards at this time.

Concerts

Thanks to all who attended the two concerts in church last week. The collection at the Arval Choir concert raised £100 for the Swindon Night Shelter and £100 for the Swindon Food Collective. The Choral Society workshop was much enjoyed by all the participants but raised no money as it was free!

Please welcome

Alan Smith, who now lives in Frome was baptised in Wroughton Parish Church on 27th October 1939.  Alan and his wife, ‘Mary’ are planning to join us at 10.00am on Sunday, 27th October this year to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his baptism.

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Tearfund

Our mission prayers during October and November concentrate on Tearfund, a Christian organisation that works in many countries of the world helping to improve the lives of marginalised people. Much of their work involves promoting self-help groups in communities so that people learn to use and share what resources they have in a more economical and productive way. In Pakistan they are encouraging imaginative ways of recycling the large piles of plastic waste which have become a health hazard. This not only reduces the impact of the plastic on the environment, but also creates an income for the local people.

There are petition cards on the coffee table in church, addressing the problem of single-use plastics by big businesses. Please take a card, fill it in and send it off as directed. Together we can be very effective in bringing about change.  Please pray:

  • for the communities in Pakistan as they address the problems caused by plastic waste
  • for the involvement of Tearfund with local self-help groups
  • for their “rubbish campaign” to succeed in persuading large businesses to reduce single-use plastics

Knitting for Mission to Seafarers

This week I have sent off the latest batch of 35 scarves and 14 hats to the Mission to Seafarers. These items are given to seafarers who are recruited in warmer climes and find themselves without suitable clothing to keep warm as they sail into colder areas.  Thank you as always to our faithful band of knitters. If you would like to do some knitting there are patterns and wool in the box near the piano in church and if you can’t knit, but would like to support us by buying wool, this also can be left there. Further details from Janet 525856

This week please also pray for:-

  • Tearfund
  • The homeless as it gets colder
  • The patients and staff of Ladymead Nursing Home
  • Healing on the Streets
  • Our Bible Study Groups
  • We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently especially Marion Durston, Beryl Henderson and Brian Richards. We pray for all who mourn the loss of loved ones.
