4pm                     CHURCH AT 4 MEETING in the Church Hall

All ages welcome.

Dear all,

During September we are celebrating the Season of Creation. This is the period in the annual church calendar, from 1st September to 4th October, dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life. Originally an Eastern Orthodox initiative, Creationtide has now spread widely among Anglican, Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations, bringing Christians together to pray and work for the protection of the environment. Many churches choose to use this time of year to hold special services and events to give thanks for God’s gift of creation, and to renew their commitment to caring for our one planet home. We live in a time when we are only distantly connected to the patterns of the agricultural year; Harvest Festival and Rogation Days have lost much of their significance. Creationtide is an opportunity to reconnect and remind ourselves of the importance of the natural world, not just for our sustenance, but also for its own sake; because God created it and ‘saw that it was good’ (Gen 1:31).   Revd Phill

Mask wearing in church

The current PCC policy requesting that masks continue to be worn in church has been updated to recognise individual choice so that mask wearing will now be advisory only, providing that the president and chalice assistants will continue to wear masks during the distribution of Holy Communion. As Covid 19 has not disappeared, the situation will be kept under review.

Chris Hunter’s ordination

Chris will be ordained priest in Bristol Cathedral at 6pm on Thursday 29th September 😊

We know that 6pm in Bristol on a Thursday might be challenge for some, particularly those with work/family commitments (also clashes with choir practice!), but it would be wonderful if we could show our support for Chris by getting as many people together as we can. Booking a coach is unlikely to be economical this time, but several cars will be going and all currently have spaces.  Please can you let Janet in the office know if you are driving and willing to take passengers as we need another couple of drivers!  (office@wroughon.com).

Harvest Collection in aid of The Filling Station

We will be celebrating harvest on Sunday 25th September and as usual we will be collecting some of our harvest bounty to share with people who are facing hardship. Our church has a long connection with The Filling Station, which is  a mobile kitchen that sets up in a car park in central Swindon every Thursday evening. The team supports 50 homeless people or those at risk of homelessness each week. They serve soup, hot and cold drinks, hotdogs, sandwiches and a variety of cakes and biscuits, while building relationships and just talking to the people who come along. They also hand out a ‘care package’ which contains a variety of basic essentials ranging from toothbrushes to blankets.

This year, the Filling Station are asking for donations of tinned food, preferably with a ring pull opening:

  • Rice Pudding
  • Any ‘nutritious’ soup
  • Baked Beans
  • Beans and Sausages
  • Hot Dog Sausages (these are heated up and served on the nights they go out)
  • Toilet Rolls
  • Razors
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap/shower gel/shampoo

We’re facing a climate and ecological emergency – What can we do?

The breakdown of the climate is destroying our world. It will destroy countless species, the food and water supplies we rely on, the places we love, our communities and our futures. It will lead to war, migration, starvation for billions. What are our responsibilities as Christians at this time? Join with other Swindon churches: Wednesday 14th Sept 2022 at 7.00pm Swindon Friends Meeting House, 79 Eastcott Hill, SN1 1JF.

Art Workshop.   We will be holding another art workshop entitled ‘A brush with the Divine, which is a repeat of the one’s held in the summer.  If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Chris Offord (delniart@gmail.com) or collect a leaflet from the back of church.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

September – At the shops

  1. Buy local and in season produce and look forward to seasonal changes. For example a punnet of strawberries flown in or grown locally in a hothouse in winter has a 1.8kg CO2e emissions cost. Whereas locally grown in the UK in summer its only 0.15kg a punnet.
  2. Do you really need a new computer, laptop or phone? Manufacturing new goods has a high environmental cost. A new laptop has a carbon footprint of 200kg and a high end desk top 800kg CO2e.
  3. Think ahead to Christmas! How can you show love in your gift giving without costing the earth? Discuss having a Secret Santa or a price limit with family members, choose small thoughtful presents, or hand make gifts.

Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have, died recently Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II,

Frederick Hanratty, Jack Mapstone, Peter Wylie, Susan White and Monica Matthews.  We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Monday 19th September by Janet Burchell & Phyl Bamford in memory of

Jack Bamford on his birthday;

On Wednesday 21st September by Ann & Karen Everden in memory of Roy Everden on his birthday;

On Thursday 22nd September by Vivienne Hayward in memory of her Mother, Joyce Woodcock.

Help is needed to make our ‘Green Festival’ a success…….

  • Donations of good quality books, jigsaws and board games – for the ‘swap’. There is a box near the font for donations (or contact Helena on 07909 882150 for collection).  All books, games and jigsaws left over after the event will be sent to the charity ‘Books 4 Africa’
  • Donations of cakes, baked biscuits, scones etc for our refreshments (bring to church hall on the day or contact Carolyn Kirk for delivery/collection beforehand)
  • We need clean plastic bottles (large and small), and kitchen roll/toilet roll tubes for the children’s activities – please put them in the box near the font
  • Help on the day! If you can offer a few hours to help with refreshments or the children’s activities – please let one of the Eco Church team know.
  • Come and visit and support us on the day ……

Thank You!
