Mask wearing in church

The current PCC policy requesting that masks continue to be worn in church has been updated to recognise individual choice so that mask wearing will now be advisory only, providing that the president and chalice assistants will continue to wear masks during the distribution of Holy Communion. As Covid 19 has not disappeared, the situation will be kept under review.

Church at 4 – open meeting

For a number of years Church at 4 has offered a more contemporary style Sunday service at 4pm in the Church Hall. This has attracted a younger congregation and so it has also been the primary place where we have engaged with families with children. Unfortunately a combination of circumstances has seen attendance fall from an average of around 30 people in 2018 to just 10 in 2022. We have lost the ‘critical mass’ that makes children’s work feasible and consequently we no longer attract people with children. Many of the people who come to this service have already been to church at 10am.

As a wider church community, we need to reflect on two key questions:

What is the purpose of Church at 4? (Is it simply an opportunity for church members to enjoy a different style of worship?)

What is our approach to engaging with and discipling younger generations of Christians?

There will be an opportunity to discuss these questions and share ideas at 11:45 on Sunday 23rd October. This meeting will be held IN CHURCH after the 10am service and it is hoped that as many people as possible will contribute. Please come and share your thoughts, whether or not you have ever been to Church at 4 yourself.

The Filling Station – Sandwiches, Thursday 13th October

Our church will be supplying sandwiches etc. for the homeless via the Filling Station on Thursday, 13th October. If you would be willing to prepare a loaf of sandwiches or supply something else, please add your name to the signup sheet on the church chest and take a reminder card. Please note that this time the food needs to be taken to 11 Blenheim Road (Alan and Kathy Gregory’s).

Filling Station – Thank You

From the clients and trustees of The Filling Station, a huge thank you to all concerned for the really generous harvest donations. A great deal of thought has obviously gone into the choosing of your very suitable gifts. Some of the items will have been out in the van by the time you read this!

Thank you, as ever to the van packers, drivers, sandwich makers and donors on whose help we depend throughout the year.  Andrew Bond

Men’s Group – Saturday 22nd October

The next meeting of the Men’s Group is scheduled for Saturday 22nd October, and weather permitting, will be a local walk staring at 8.45 am. The Group is an informal gathering of Christian men for discussion, and with a willingness to assist local individuals in need of practical help (though our artisan skills may be a little limited!)

The Group is keen to widen its local membership and newcomers are welcomed. If you are interested, please contact Mike Mason via  masonmj@ntlworld.com or 07899 041596.’

RAIN GARDENS AND PLANTERS – Saturday 22nd October

There will be a gardening afternoon to plant up the rain garden and planters at the church hall on Saturday 22nd October. It would be great if you could join us.

We have been offered some perennials for the garden, but would be interested in some other plants as well, particularly sedges, ornamental grasses, shrubs such as dogwoods or vincas, and evergreen perennials. Have any of the green-fingered among you been growing cuttings, splitting perennials and have plants to spare?

If you can help, please contact Joan Orman (joan.orman@btinternet.com)

Join in the mission – Pumpkin Party – Saturday 29th October

On Saturday 29th October from 11am to 1pm we will be having a Pumpkin Party in the Church Hall. This is a family event for the village as an alternative to Halloween and the organisers need more people to make it work. There will be crafts, games and food. All the craft and games will be set up but we need people to oversee them and we need people in the kitchen to set out food make drinks and wash up.  No special skills are needed but a willingness to chat would be good.  There is a sign-up list in church and nearer the time we will be asking for volunteers to supply some of the food.  Barbara

All Soul’s Evensong – Sunday 30th October at 6.00pm

All Souls Day is the day in the church year when we particularly remember, pray for, and commend to God all those who have died. At this service we will be remembering by name some of those who have died. If you would like the name of your loved one remembered in this way then please add their name to the back of church. If you prefer, you can also email us at: office@wroughton.com or telephone 07193 812050 (9am to 1pm Mon, Weds, Thurs and Fri). All are welcome to join us for this reflective and moving service, please consider inviting anyone your know who has been affected by bereavement, whether recently or in the past. Tea and coffee will be served after the service.

London Marathon

Rebecca has asked us to pass on her thanks to all those who sponsored her in the London Marathon which takes place this weekend on 2nd October. As you may recall she is running for Scope, a charity which helps the  disabled. We have left the link below for anyone who would like to give

Vote for the National Trust to stop banking with Barclays

It’s ironic that Europe’s largest conservation charity banks with Europe’s largest bankroller of climate changing fossil fuel emissions! Christian climate campaigners have tabled a resolution for November’s AGM of the National Trust. It calls on the Trust to cease banking with Barclays if the bank fails to adopt a radical policy of fossil fuel divestment. If you’re a National Trust member, please vote for the NT to cease banking with Barclays Bank. Voting papers will be in the autumn magazine – you can easily vote online or by post.  A vote for the Resolution is a vote for the Trust’s strategy: “For everyone and For ever” A large response will send a loud and clear message, so please let friends and family know.  Thank You.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

October – What’s on the menu?

  1. Think about your food before it reaches your table. 45% of the carbon emissions from food comes from production (on the farm), 28% in food processing, 7% in packaging and 19% from transport. Home grown has the lowest carbon footprint!
  2. Learn how to cook a new vegetarian or vegan meal each week. Why? Switching to plant based protein is better for your health and carbon budget. 1kg weight: beef/lamb 19kg CO2e (cows and sheep burp methane); chicken 4.5kg CO2e; beans 2kg CO2e; and lentils 0.9 kg CO2e.

Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have, died recently baby Stella Ford.  We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Wednesday 12th October by Julie Gabe in memory of Violet Rose Whyte.
