Mask wearing in church
The current PCC policy requesting that masks continue to be worn in church has been updated to recognise individual choice so that mask wearing will now be advisory only, providing that the president and chalice assistants will continue to wear masks during the distribution of Holy Communion. As Covid 19 has not disappeared, the situation will be kept under review.
Church at 4 – open meeting
For a number of years Church at 4 has offered a more contemporary style Sunday service at 4pm in the Church Hall. This has attracted a younger congregation and so it has also been the primary place where we have engaged with families with children. Unfortunately a combination of circumstances has seen attendance fall from an average of around 30 people in 2018 to just 10 in 2022. We have lost the ‘critical mass’ that makes children’s work feasible and consequently we no longer attract people with children. Many of the people who come to this service have already been to church at 10am.
As a wider church community, we need to reflect on two key questions:
What is the purpose of Church at 4? (Is it simply an opportunity for church members to enjoy a different style of worship?)
What is our approach to engaging with and discipling younger generations of Christians?
There will be an opportunity to discuss these questions and share ideas at 11:45 on Sunday 23rd October. This meeting will be held IN CHURCH after the 10am service and it is hoped that as many people as possible will contribute. Please come and share your thoughts, whether or not you have ever been to Church at 4 yourself.
Men’s Group – Saturday 22nd October
The next meeting of the Men’s Group is scheduled for Saturday 22nd October, and weather permitting, will be a local walk staring at 8.45 am. The Group is an informal gathering of Christian men for discussion, and with a willingness to assist local individuals in need of practical help (though our artisan skills may be a little limited!)
The Group is keen to widen its local membership and newcomers are welcomed. If you are interested, please contact Mike Mason via masonmj@ntlworld.com or 07899 041596.’
RAIN GARDENS AND PLANTERS – Saturday 22nd October, 2pm
There will be a gardening afternoon to plant up the rain garden and planters at the church hall on Saturday 22nd October. It would be great if you could join us.
We have been offered some perennials for the garden, but would be interested in some other plants as well, particularly sedges, ornamental grasses, shrubs such as dogwoods or vincas, and evergreen perennials. Have any of the green-fingered among you been growing cuttings, splitting perennials and have plants to spare?
If you can help, please contact Joan Orman (joan.orman@btinternet.com)
‘Pray and Bless Wroughton & Wichelstowe’ – this Tuesday 25 October – evening prayer meeting, to come together and pray specifically for our local community, 7.30pm Church Hall for about an hour. Do come and join us. (Please note the date for the November prayer meeting is Tues 22 November.)
Pumpkin Party Food – Saturday 29th October
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help at the Pumpkin Party, even if you haven’t signed up you are still welcome to come. We will need some food to give partygoers, so if you can help with some sandwiches , cakes or something else there is a list of the sort of food we would like on the table at the crossing in church.
All Soul’s Evensong – Sunday 30th October at 6.00pm
All Souls Day is the day in the church year when we particularly remember, pray for, and commend to God all those who have died. At this service we will be remembering by name some of those who have died. If you would like the name of your loved one remembered in this way then please add their name to the back of church. If you prefer, you can also email us at: office@wroughton.com or telephone 07193 812050 (9am to 1pm Mon, Weds, Thurs and Fri). All are welcome to join us for this reflective and moving service, please consider inviting anyone your know who has been affected by bereavement, whether recently or in the past. Tea and coffee will be served after the service.
Tear Fund Big Quiz Night – Saturday 19th November at 6.45pm

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation
October – What’s on the menu?
- Cut back on cheese and dairy products. Cows burp methane a very strong greenhouse gas. Eat more plant based alternatives like oat or soya “milk”, hummus, olives, nuts and seeds.
- Stick to tap water. Bottled water comes with a 320g per litre carbon footprint, whereas tap water is a mere 0.24g CO2e per litre. If you don’t like the taste of your home tap water, install an under the sink water filter.
