Your financial support in 2023

If you are on the church electoral roll then you will have recently received a letter about your financial support for our church. Your kind support for our church is valued and important and we hope and pray that you will feel able to continue to support us financially during the year ahead. The effects of inflation and increasing energy prices mean we expect our costs to rise by around £9,000 in 2023.

  • Please would you think about whether you can increase your giving at least in line with inflation. This means for every £10 you give now you would give £11.00 in 2023.
  • If you haven’t reviewed your giving for some time, then please would you consider prayerfully whether you might be able to increase this?

Whatever you decide, it would be really helpful if you could return the pledge card that was included with your letter. Knowing what you pan to give during the year ahead helps us to set a realistic budget, something that is particularly important in these challenging times.

Carol Service

Our carol service is coming up! Please remember to invite friends and neighbours to join us at 6pm on Sunday 11th December for a traditional service of Christmas readings and carols. In our secular society it isn’t always easy for Christians to feel confident talking about their faith with those outside the church. However, this all changes at Christmas, when it is almost expected! Let’s make the most of the opportunities that this season brings.

Church@4

You may have seen in the last few weeks that we have been discussing the future of Church@4, a service that is more informal and contemporary than our other services, and usually happens at 4 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon in the Church Hall. This week, the PCC made the decision to suspend Church@4 for the time being while we consider what God is saying to us at the moment and how we invest our energy to engage with families and people in our community who are outside of the church.

We will be reviewing this decision in three months time. This is a time for the PCC, the Church@4 team and our whole church to pause, reflect and pray. Please support the church’s mission with your prayers during this time and pray that God will guide us and give us discernment as to how we can proclaim his word. We believe that prayer during this time is vital and will be the basis for how we continue to work as Church@4 and as part of the church in Wroughton and Wichelstowe.

In the words of the liturgy we often use during Advent, may Christ when he comes find us watching and waiting.

Revd Chris

Monday Bible Study Group

We will meet for the last session on Monday 5th December, usual time. This will be an informal coffee morning and you need only bring yourself and either a funny story, a poem of anything else you may like to share and entertain.  We will meet for our first meeting of of 2023 on Monday 9th January.

Legge House invite you to one of our two fundraising Christmas dinner.

As in previous years these lunchtime /  evening events will be a time to relax and enjoy yourselves, while supporting Legge House’s work with many young people.   As this is a fund raising event we are asking for £27.50 per person.  As usual soft drinks provided but you would be welcome to bring your own bottle.  The date will be Monday 12th December, at 6.30pm for 7pm meal.

We also plan to hold a lunch time dinner for those preferring to get home before it is dark. On   Thursday 15th at 12.30pm for 1pm meal.  Contact leggehouse@btconnect.com  or 813273 to book your place.

Knitting for charities.

Thanks to those of you knitting squares for GWH’s End of Life unit. We are now sewing together a blanket in autumn colours and have already got 40 other squares -halfway to the next one. 6 inch squares in any colour DK wool are most welcome. Please do not use glittery wool and please thread the ends of your squares in.

Last week I heard from Mission to Seafarers that they can accept hats, gloves and scarves again. I have two large boxes of hats and scarves waiting since early 2020 to be sent off. If you would prefer to knit these rather than squares then now is the time to get started again. I will put some patterns in the box by the choir vestry in church. If you would like to contribute but cannot knit then donations of Double Knitting wool are always welcome. These can also be left in the box in church. Many thanks. Janet Henderson.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

December – Christmas Crackers

  1. Real trees have a much lower carbon footprint than artificial ones, especially if disposed of by wood-chipping. An artificial tree would need to be reused for ten years to be comparable.
  2. This Advent ponder on Jesus’ coming to be with us on earth. How are we preparing His creation for Him to live with us here? Pray for grace and wisdom to play your part in caring for creation.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Sunday 4th December by Russell Cleverley in memory of Barbara Cleverley on what would have been her 100th birthday;

On Thursday 8th December by Pat Yule & family in memory of Kenneth Yule on the first anniversary of his death;

Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have, died recently Margaret Smith. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.
