Study Leave

As some of you may already know after almost 25years of ministry in Wroughton I shall be taking a three month Sabbatical (Study Leave) beginning on Monday 11th April. Although I will not be in Church I will be about in the village and spending some weekends away and days out visiting Holy Wells and Sacred Springs.  I hope my visits will inspire some embroidery or artwork of some kind.  I hope to return to Church much refreshed about half way through July.  Barbara Abrey.

If you are a regular worshipper with us, please fill in an Electoral Roll form if you have not done so in previous years. This registers you on as a member of our church and allows you to vote for PCC members at our Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM).

Teams in schools and those meeting young people where they gather, have been sharing the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection with them. Please pray that other things they see or hear during the holidays will prompt them to think about God’s love for them

Fundraising for Children’s Library in Uganda

Lent groups

The Wroughton Passion Play provides us with the opportunity of witnessing a dramatic retelling of the events leading towards Jesus’ death. As we journey with the main players, we will hear their response to what is unfolding before them, with sections taken from Stephen Cottrell’s book ‘The Nail’. This will be our starting point as we spend time together looking at some of the key characters and at our own response to Jesus during our Lent studies. Lent groups started last week and there are still 4 sessions left- please sign up if you are interested…

Lent Compline—Thursdays at 6.30pm

There will be a short reflective Compline service each Thursday during Lent- from 6.30pm- 7pm in church. Each week we will be focusing on a different spiritual discipline, including prayer and meditation, worship, fasting, Bible study, simplicity and service. This week we are thinking about worship.

Count your Blessings

Do please use the Christian Aid leaflet, Count Your Blessings to help you keep Lent well. This is also an excellent way of giving the charity our support and will help us to appreciate all the blessings that we have. 

Sunday Afternoon Tea & Chat

Some of you may know that a few members of the church provide a Sunday afternoon tea for several selected guests, four times a year. These teas are very important to our guests because in some cases it is the only time they actually go out. We all have a lovely time and the afternoon passes quickly. The trouble is that our guests are dwindling due to illness etc and we need some more. To qualify as one of our selected guests you just have to be 75 years of age or over. You can come as a couple or on your own, we will make you very welcome. Or you may know someone else who might benefit from an afternoon of relaxing tea and a chat. If you don’t think you’re old enough, even though you are 75, then would you consider coming as a companion to those who already come, just so they have more people to talk to? You don’t have to pay and we will even provide transport if necessary. Please speak to Ann Stone or the Vicar for more information.

Praying for the Play

Our next prayer meeting for the Passion Play is on Monday 14th March, 7pm at 49, Perry’s Lane. Do join us for an hour to pray for the final rehearsals and all the logistics as we fast approach the performance date!

Wroughton Passion Play – Fund Raising

In have now raised two thirds of the money we need for the Passion Play performance via grants and are hoping to raise the rest though individual donations. If you are able to donate online our giving website. https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/wroughtonpassionplay If you would prefer to donate by cheque (made payable to Wroughton PCC) or cash these can be left at the Parish Church Office, Priors Hill in an envelope marked for the Passion Play. We are not charging those who come to see the play, so even if people could give the equivalent to the price of a couple of cinema/theatre tickets it would really help us to meet our budget. Pancake Races

Filling Station Sandwiches

It will be our church’s turn to provide sandwiches etc. for the Filling Station on Thursday, 3rd March. If you are willing to donate some food, please sign on the list on the church chest and take a reminder card. Thank you.

Women’s World Day of Prayer – Friday 4th March 2016.

Swindon Youth for Christ

A survey in Swindon has found that 1 in 10 young people feel unable to cope with everyday life, and 19% feel they have no hope. To contact some of young people like these, the BIOS van visits schools at lunchtimes, and makes regular weekly visits to places in and around Swindon where young people congregate after school and in the evenings.

Please pray for those working with BIOS, and for the contacts and conversations that happen. 

Request from Amos Kimera

Amos Kimerea from our link diocese in Uganda who stayed with us in 2014 and his wife are involved in a project to set up a children’s library in a Women Education Centre in  his diocese of Kampala. The centre was initiated by women from the Mother’s Union and The Christian Women’s Fellowship and the aim is to provide books for children between 1 and 15 years. Some of these children are orphans and a number of them attend schools who are unable to provide them with suitable books which prevents them from making good progress. The hope is that the library will boost the children’s ability to compete favourably with children from better schools. If you would like to make a donation please speak to Michael, Carolyn Kirk, or Margaret Penfound.

Rose Rogers on placement We welcome Rose from the parish of Parks and Walcot this Sunday who will be spending a month working alongside us as she explores her own calling. Rose will be taking part in different ways during Sunday services and on weekdays will be visiting home groups, care homes and schools during her time with us. Do have a chat with her!

Confirmation Group – next meeting Wed 3rd Feb

Our Confirmation preparation group for adults meets on Wednesdays from 7.30pm – 9.00pm at the Vicarage. If you have not been confirmed, are interested in exploring the possibility of Confirmation or would like a refresher course, please come. The Confirmation will be at St Michael’s Highworth on Wednesday 20th April at 7.30pm

Baptism Service Volunteers

Would you be able to help when we have baptisms on the third Sunday at 11.30am? We need helpers to welcome the families and friends of those who are being baptised, people to help put out what we need for the service, people to help in the service and musicians. If you could help, even just once, please sign up on the sheet in church. Thank you

Holiday Club

A planning meeting will be held on Tuesday 9th February 8pm at 17 Edgar Row Close, all welcome to bring  fresh ideas for our 25th year.

Pancake Races

We will be having pancake races in Willow Brook Gardens from 11am on Tuesday 16th February followed by pancakes in the Church Hall at 12noon. Anyone able to help let Barbara or Nicola know. This is not Shrove Tuesday but the week after which is school half-term.

Yr 1 children visiting the church It’s wonderful to be able to welcome children from East Wichel Primary to find out more about the church again this year. 52 five and six year olds will be joining us in the afternoon on Wednesday 10th February from 1.00pm. If you are available to come and help show them around the church building, help them with a bit of dressing up and talk to them about what it means to be a part of the church community, please let Nicola know.
Church at 4 – Musicians needed!

Would you be able to play at Church at 4 just once a month? We are looking for musicians to accompany songs either on their own or with others. Please contact Nicola or Michael if you could help. Thank you

Wroughton Passion Play

If you would like to be a part of the large crowd scenes in the play (no acting experience needed) we are holding an open meeting on Thursday 4th February at 8pm in Legge House for a cup of tea and a biscuit and a chat about what it involves. It will be very informal and friendly! We’d love as many people as possible to be involved in the crowd- it’s a great way to witness to the presence of our church community here in the village.

Caring for our church – new cleaners needed!

One of our volunteer cleaners has had to give up temporarily for health reasons, which leaves us very short of people willing to undertake this work. If you are fit enough to wield a broom, duster or vacuum cleaner you are amply qualified for the task! Please carefully consider if you can commit to 11/2 hours once every 6 weeks to help keep God’s house in good order and if you decide you can, contact Margaret Penfound (812139).

Coffee Rota

Would you like to be part of our coffee team? We would love to have one or two new people to help us. It will involve doing the coffees about once every 5 weeks Please speak to Sally Parker if you are interested Thank you
