Church Electoral Roll Revision

At this time of year we are revising our Church Electoral Roll in preparation for our annual church meeting on 30th April. This is the roll of members of our church who are entitled to vote at that meeting. If you are not yet on our Church Electoral Roll, please fill in a form today and place it in the box as you leave the church.

As an organisation we are obliged to follow the rules set out in the Data Protection Act, and have a Data Protection Policy which states how we comply with these requirements.

As a church we hold personal data for the purposes of maintaining membership of the church, and for administering activities for individuals who are either members of the church or have regular contact with it. We will never disclose personal details to parties outside the church, without the express permission of individuals to do so.  If anyone has any concerns on personal data held, or any questions on data protection, then please contact Helena Thomas (Data Controller) or speak to one of the clergy or churchwardens.

Dementia Friends Information Session

Last year I trained as a Dementia Friends Champion with the Alzheimer`s Society. This enables me to run information sessions to local community groups. Dementia Friends is a social action movement that aims to increase understanding of dementia and inspire people to take action to support people affected by dementia in their community. The sessions last for 1 hour  – would you like to come along to learn more about dementia and how we can help those around us?? If so, please sign the sign up sheet with your details on the Church Chest. I will then plan dates and let you know when the sessions are running –

 CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

In some schools the BIOS van may visit at lunchtime or after school to provide opportunities for the young people to talk with the SYFC workers. Some schools may have Christian groups which SYFC are able to support.

Please pray for all the young people in Swindon’s schools, that they will be able to find out about God’s love for them.

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Swindon Youth for Christ

For the past nine years, SYFC has been developing “LUSH”, a course on sex and relationships which is used as part of schools’ personal, social and health education curriculum. This year, in addition to the tried and tested material, they have added a new strand looking at the effects of pornography. The programme recognises that young people need safe spaces to talk about these important life issues.

Please pray that more schools will invite SYFC to provide this course for them, and that young people will be transformed for the better by this work.

Birthdays

Happy Birthday to Tim Winter, Ruth Woolley and Robert Evans who celebrate their birthdays during the coming week.

Moving on…

I announced on Sunday 15th January that after 23 years as your vicar I would be moving on after the end on May. Sunday 28th May will be my last Sunday. I have chosen this moment because we have a strong and capable team in place to lead the parish through the vacancy and because it will be good to have a new incumbent in place to lead the parish when the new Church of England Secondary School opens in Middle Wichel. Thank you for the privilege of serving in our parish and for your support and encouragement. Sue and I will for ever look back on our time in Wroughton with affection.                                             Michael

Bishop Mike to retire

On Monday Bishop Mike announced his intention to retire from 30th September. After 14 years as our bishop. He wrote, ‘ As you can imagine, there have been some amazing times and some difficult seasons, but it has been a huge joy and privilege to have served you as your Diocesan Bishop and I thank you for the love, friendship, support and encouragement you have offered.’

We wish Bishop Mike every happiness in his retirement.

Creating Connections Lent Course

Look out for a sign-up sheet in the next couple of weeks.

Show the love

Climate change is already impacting many of the places that we cherish… this February, people across the country will show their concern for the places that they love through the power of green hearts. showthelove.org.uk is a national project encouraging people to start conversations about what we can each do to make a difference. As part of this we’re invited to share pictures of the places that we love- see our Facebook page near Valentine’s Day, and add your own pics!

On Friday 3rd March 2017 this year it is being hosted by St Joseph’s church and the service will be at 1.45pm.

Supper and Chat – ten good years

Supper and Chat started in October 2006 at The Iron Horse in Kerr’s Way with me and David Penfound. The idea was to take the church down into the village –where better place than a pub? – discussing topical events and religious questions. It worked, making new friends and answering questions. We occasionally had a meal, but it was mostly chat evenings. Eventually we moved out and finished up in The Brown Jack as Supp and Chat, with the same intentions. Alas time moves on, we are getting older, youth seemed to be noisier, especially when playing darts, space became limited, much as we liked being there it just wasn’t feasible in the long term. Rather than just fade away we moved to each other’s houses with the same intentions, discussion on topical events and religious questions, our “Supp” is now tea or coffee with the occasional meal out.

Why don’t you consider joining us – especially if you are new to the church and village – you would be very welcome – we are a warm-hearted group, laugh a lot as well as talk well. We always meet on a Monday evening, lifts are available, the dates are in the church notices, or from Gwen on 813573.

Office Email Changes

We have changed the email system at the Parish Office. Please only use the office@wroughton.com email address in future. Many thanks Janet

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Swindon Youth for Christ

A survey in Swindon has found that 1 in 10 young people feel unable to cope with everyday life, and 19% feel they have no hope.

To contact some of young people like these, the BIOS van visits schools at lunchtimes, and makes regular weekly visits to places in and around Swindon where young people congregate after school and in the evenings.

Please pray for those working with BIOS, and for the contacts and conversations that happen.

Knit for Mission to Seafarers

Thanks you to all who have handed in knitwear. I sent 17 hats, 1 balaclava and 18 scarves to the Mission to Seafarers last week and have received a letter thanking us. There are a number of balls of wool in the box, also some patterns, if you would like to start knitting. Please keep those hats, scarves and gloves rolling in. Many thanks. Janet Henderson

Meals for Uganda

Thank you everyone who gave to the appeal to enable poor families in northern Uganda to have something more than just rice for their Christmas meal. As a result, we shall be sending £77 to our CMS partner Kate Quarrell for her to distribute as she thinks fit.

This week please pray for:-

  • Swindon Youth for Christ
  • The Residents of Langton Park and Rylane
  • Our PCC members as they meet on Monday
  • Our Church and Worship Group
  • We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently. We pray for all who mourn the loss of loved ones

Thank you for the privilege of serving in our parish and for your support and encouragement. Sue and I will for ever look back on our time in Wroughton with affection.                                              Michael

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be marked by a special service at Wroughton Methodist Church at 3.00pm today, Sunday 22nd January when we will be joining Christians from other churches in the village.

You are warmly invited.

New School Prayer Meeting –

Monday 23rd January 7.30pm in Church

We meet in church on Monday to pray for the new Church of England Secondary School in Middle Wichel which will now open in 2019. Linda Culling, a Church of England Licenced Lay Minister has been appointed head of the new school and we shall particularly be praying for her in her now role.

Bible stories at the Infants school

There may be an opportunity for us to go back into Wroughton Infants School with our Open the Book assemblies about once a month at 9 am on Monday mornings. As this is a different time our old team are not all available and so if you would like to be part of the new team (no experience needed) reading/acting Bible stories please sign up on the sheet provided. The assemblies usually last less than half an hour so it would not take up your whole morning. Any questions just ask Barbara Abrey or Jean Leo.

Thank You

Many thanks to all those who made a donation to The Children’s Society at one of the Christingle services on Christmas Eve. The total raised was £988.31.

Running the London Marathon in aid of Hospice UK

On April 23 I am running London Marathon in aid of Hospice UK, aiming to fundraise £2,000. You can donate online at www.justgiving.com/Victoria-J-Ford and Mum (Jean Ford) has a sponsorship sheet if you would prefer to donate in the old fashioned way.

On Mothering Sunday (March 26) I will be selling cakes after the 10am service. Please do let me know if you can bake and donate a cake, and bring your spare change to buy one, too!

Thank you in advance,

Victoria Ford

  • The Residents of Lancaster Road and Mattocks Path
  • Legge House Management Committee
  • Those couples attending Wedding preparation on Saturday
  • We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently especially Maureen Durbridge. We pray for all who mourn the loss of loved ones.
