Lent groups

The Wroughton Passion Play provides us with the opportunity of witnessing a dramatic retelling of the events leading towards Jesus’ death. As we journey with the main players, we will hear their response to what is unfolding before them, with sections taken from Stephen Cottrell’s book ‘The Nail’. This will be our starting point as we spend time together looking at some of the key characters and at our own response to Jesus during our Lent studies. Lent groups started last week and there are still 4 sessions left- please sign up if you are interested…

The Lent Groups will be on:-

Monday morning- 10am- 11, St John Road- Margaret Penfound

Tuesday evening- 7.30pm- (fortnightly)- 12, Artis Ave- Carolyn Kirk

Wednesday evening- 7.30pm- 49, Perry’s Lane- Nicola Such

Friday evening- 7.30pm- 11, St John Road- Cheryl Hawkins

Lent Compline—Thursdays at 6.30pm

There will be a short reflective Compline service each Thursday during Lent- from 6.30pm- 7pm in church. Each week we will be focusing on a different spiritual discipline, including prayer and meditation, worship, fasting, Bible study, simplicity and service. This week we are thinking about worship.

Count your Blessings

Do please use the Christian Aid leaflet, Count Your Blessings to help you keep Lent well. This is also an excellent way of giving the charity our support and will help us to appreciate all the blessings that we have.

Sunday Afternoon Tea & Chat

Some of you may know that a few members of the church provide a Sunday afternoon tea for several selected guests, four times a year. These teas are very important to our guests because in some cases it is the only time they actually go out. We all have a lovely time and the afternoon passes quickly. The trouble is that our guests are dwindling due to illness etc and we need some more. To qualify as one of our selected guests you just have to be 75 years of age or over. You can come as a couple or on your own, we will make you very welcome. Or you may know someone else who might benefit from an afternoon of relaxing tea and a chat. If you don’t think you’re old enough, even though you are 75, then would you consider coming as a companion to those who already come, just so they have more people to talk to? You don’t have to pay and we will even provide transport if necessary. Please speak to Ann Stone or the Vicar for more information.

Praying for the Play

Our next prayer meeting for the Passion Play is on Monday 14th March, 7pm at 49, Perry’s Lane. Do join us for an hour to pray for the final rehearsals and all the logistics as we fast approach the performance date!

Wroughton Passion Play – Fund Raising

In have now raised two thirds of the money we need for the Passion Play performance via grants and are hoping to raise the rest though individual donations. If you are able to donate online our giving website. https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/wroughtonpassionplay If you would prefer to donate by cheque (made payable to Wroughton PCC) or cash these can be left at the Parish Church Office, Priors Hill in an envelope marked for the Passion Play. We are not charging those who come to see the play, so even if people could give the equivalent to the price of a couple of cinema/theatre tickets it would really help us to meet our budget. Thank you! Nicola

Pancake Races

A big thank you to our small team of helpers who made the pancake races such a great success. We have had many messages of thanks.

Filling Station Sandwiches

It will be our church’s turn to provide sandwiches etc. for the Filling Station on Thursday, 3rd March. If you are willing to donate some food, please sign on the list on the church chest and take a reminder card. Thank you.

CHURCH IN THE WIDER WORLD

Swindon Youth for Christ

A survey in Swindon has found that 1 in 10 young people feel unable to cope with everyday life, and 19% feel they have no hope. To contact some of young people like these, the BIOS van visits schools at lunchtimes, and makes regular weekly visits to places in and around Swindon where young people congregate after school and in the evenings.

Please pray for those working with BIOS, and for the contacts and conversations that happen.

Request from Amos Kimera

Amos Kimerea from our link diocese in Uganda who stayed with us in 2014 and his wife are involved in a project to set up a children’s library in a Women Education Centre in  his diocese of Kampala. The centre was initiated by women from the Mother’s Union and The Christian Women’s Fellowship and the aim is to provide books for children between 1 and 15 years. Some of these children are orphans and a number of them attend schools who are unable to provide them with suitable books which prevents them from making good progress. The hope is that the library will boost the children’s ability to compete favourably with children from better schools. If you would like to make a donation please speak to Michael, Carolyn Kirk, or Margaret Penfound.

This week please pray for:-

  • Swindon Youth for Christ
  • The Residents of Yardlee Walk and Nunwick Way
  • The staff, patients and volunteers of the Prospect Hospice
  • All those involved in Wroughton Passion Play
  • Our Lent Groups
  • We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died recently especially Brian Walton, Wendy O’Neill and baby Ben Mead Green. We pray for all who mourn the loss of loved ones
