Bible Society
Bible Society have partnered with the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity to develop a Bible that is aimed at helping Christians to connect their faith to their every day lives.
We need your help to design the new cover of the new Bible, so on the table near the coffee area are some questions about cover designs and concepts. Please do have a look, answer the questions and give your sheet back to me over the next few Sundays.
All your responses will be confidential and just used cumulatively for the purpose of research.
I’m around today to answer any questions or you can email me at: andy.bissex@biblesociety.org.uk

Upper Churchyard Working Parties
Help to keep our churchyard looking its best……do come and join us on our next dates for tidying up the upper churchyard. The next session is on Saturday 17th August from 9am.…… just an hour or two’s help makes a big difference and tasks are varied. All equipment and refreshments provided. Sessions will go ahead unless the weather is particularly unpleasant!
Rocks of Love and Kindness
The children who came to our wildlife day last month enjoyed painting rocks as one of the activities. In fact they were very enthusiastic and prolific! It seems a shame not to share the love and enthusiasm that was put into the activity – so most of the rocks have now been placed around the churchyard by Alba and Rosie Lenik 😊 If you find one (many are on benches) use your senses to enjoy the colour, shape and feel of them – and please feel free to take one home if you wish……
The Filling Station – Sandwiches, Thursday 1st August
Our church will be supplying sandwiches etc. for the homeless via the Filling Station on Thursday, 1st August.
If you would be willing to prepare a loaf of sandwiches or supply something else, please add your name to the signup sheet on the church chest and take a reminder card. Please note that the food needs to be taken to 11 Blenheim Road (Alan and Kathy Gregory’s).
Walking in the light – Ephesians 5:3-20
- In verse 3 we are told not only to abstain but to not even mention fornication and impurity of any kind. Living in the modern world how do you manage to live like that? Is it more or less difficult than it was in Paul’s day and why?
- Our society often seems obsessed with sex, (adverts for even the most mundane things want us to think they are sexy) but Paul warns that we shouldn’t listen to the ’empty words’ of popular culture but should live as ‘children of light’. How do you go about that?
- In verse 10 we are told to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. How do you go about that?
- In your life do you have any strategies for avoiding works of darkness when we are asked to expose them for what they are? How do you think others will see you if you expose things that are shameful even to mention? (verse12)
- In what way do you think singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs will help you to live as you should?
- This passage has some very strong advice on how to live. Do you take well to such advice or do you want to rebel. Has your attitude changed as your Christian journey has progressed and if so how?
Why should I bother about so and so?
Ephesians 4:32. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
In fact, there are over 40 verses in the Bible that tell us to care for one another. It is the duty of everyone to be aware of and care for each other. Most of this we do it automatically on the “Good neighbour” principle and this is to be encouraged. The Church too has this responsibility, usually expressed as the Priest in Charge “The Vicar” having the “Cure of Souls” (Pastoral Care) of the flock.
This, however, Rev. Phil cannot do alone. He is helped by the clergy team and the mutually interactive small groups and role teams all supporting each other within their group or team. Sometimes though someone needs more support than their small group can provide, or even worse suffer alone as they have “slipped through the net”. Our Parish has a small team, vetted, prepared and checked to help fill any gaps or supplement existing “Good neighbour” relationships. This is called the Pastoral Group. If you know someone who could use an “Official” visit from “The Church” please let Janet in The Parish Office, The Clergy or the names below know.
If you are interested in being vetted to help out with this important ministry, supporting the Vicar, then speak to Rev. Phil, Peter Ferguson (Church Warden) or Mark Tubey (Lead having taken over from Rev Chris).
Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation
July –Transport Tips
- Be loving to others by taking the train or coach when you can. It helps ease congestion by taking your car off the road and has half the carbon footprint of a small car (coach 80g and train 100g CO2e per person per mile).
- If you are in your car show love and respect to pedestrians. Park on the road, not on their pavement – think pushchairs and disability scooters. Their walking mile has a carbon footprint of 1g compared to your small car of 280g CO2e a mile.
Mission to Seafarers
This week I have sent off 11 scarves, 3 balaclavas and 34 hats to this charity. A big thank you to all of you who have made these garments. They are much appreciated.

If you want an accessible and creative way of exploring the books of the Bible, then I can highly recommend The Bible Project. What is the Bible Project?
‘We are a nonprofit, crowdfunded organization that makes free resources like videos, podcasts, articles, and classes to help people experience the Bible in a way that is approachable and transformative. We do this by showcasing the literary art of the Scriptures and tracing key biblical themes from Genesis to Revelation.’
The Bible Project have produced overviews on every book of the Bible and have a vast array of links to other study resources to help people engage with scripture. There are also loads of free, downloadable posters and images that you can use … here’s an example from the book of Ephesians: Andy
