Church – South Door

We are experiencing  problems with one of the locks on the South Door which we will have to change.  If you have a key for this door please would you let Janet Burchell know.  Telephone 812050 or office@wroughton.com

Upper Churchyard Working Parties

Help to keep our churchyard looking its best……do come and join us on our next dates for tidying up the upper churchyard.  The next session is on Saturday 17th August from 9am.…… just an hour or two’s help makes a big difference and tasks are varied.  All equipment and refreshments provided.  Sessions will go ahead unless the weather is particularly unpleasant!

Rocks of Love and Kindness

The children who came to our wildlife day last month enjoyed painting rocks as one of the activities.  In fact they were very enthusiastic and prolific!  It seems a shame not to share the love and enthusiasm that was put into the activity – so most of the rocks have now been placed around the churchyard by Alba and Rosie Lenik 😊 If you find one (many are on benches) use your senses to enjoy the colour, shape and feel of them – and please feel free to take one home if you wish……

Week 10 – Dressed for battle – Ephesians 6:10-24

The topic of spiritual warfare is itself the subject of spiritual warfare. It can be as though certain hidden forces would much rather we didn’t talk about it, or swept it under the carpet.

  • Have you ever felt that you were engaged in a spiritual battle? How did you handle it?
  • What kind of warfare are we engaged in and what strength do we have for this battle? (v10-12)

Sometimes the attack will take a frontal form, like direct persecution; sometimes it will be more oblique, like persuading Christians to invest time and energy debating and dealing with side issues. Sometimes it will be the age-old temptations of money, sex and power. We need to recognise that the attacks are coming, to put on our armour and to stand firm.

  • Identify the six pieces of armour (v13-17) and the specific way we might use them today.
  • Most of the pieces of armour are defensive, in what way is the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God an offensive weapon?
  • Which piece of the armour is difficult for you to use and why?
  • How can you actively ‘take up’ that piece of the armour?
  • The final weapon we are given is prayer (v18-20). How does this help us fight spiritual battles? How is prayer hard work for you?
  • PRAY: Thank God for providing his armour in the battles you encounter, and ask him to help you to remember to use it, especially prayer.
  • READ: The Screwtape letters by C.S. Lewis.

Why should I bother about so and so?

Ephesians 4:32. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In fact, there are over 40 verses in the Bible that tell us to care for one another. It is the duty of everyone to be aware of and care for each other. Most of this we do it automatically on the “Good neighbour” principle and this is to be encouraged. The Church too has this responsibility, usually expressed as the Priest in Charge “The Vicar” having the “Cure of Souls” (Pastoral Care) of the flock.

This, however, Rev. Phil cannot do alone. He is helped by the clergy team and the mutually interactive small groups and role teams all supporting each other within their group or team. Sometimes though someone needs more support than their small group can provide, or even worse suffer alone as they have “slipped through the net”. Our Parish has a small team, vetted, prepared and checked to help fill any gaps or supplement existing “Good neighbour” relationships. This is called the Pastoral Group. If you know someone who could use an “Official” visit from “The Church” please let Janet in The Parish Office, The Clergy or the names below know.

If you are interested in being vetted to help out with this important ministry, supporting the Vicar, then speak to Rev. Phil, Peter Ferguson (Church Warden) or Mark Tubey (Lead having taken over from Rev Chris).

Church Cleaning

It’s the time of year when a new church cleaning rota is being produced. I would like to thank all the people who give up their time to make sure that the church looks clean and welcoming each week. We have six teams at the moment. Each team cleans the church once every six weeks at a time to suit its members. If you think that you could give an hour or so every six week to help to keep our beautiful church clean please contact Janet Henderson (01793 525856).

Knitting squares

Are you the kind person who left a bag full of knitted squares in church recently? Unfortunately I can’t read the name on the note with them. Although they are not 6inch squares there are enough of them to be able to make a blanket of the size needed by the End of Life unit at Great Western Hospital.

Thank you. Janet Henderson 525856

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

August – In your wardrobe

  1. All clothing and shoes have an environmental impact. Buy less, but longer lasting products if you can. A pair of shoes has an average carbon footprint of 11.5kg CO2e, and a pair of trousers 3kg CO2e.
  2. Buy clothing that is easy to wash and dry. About half of the environmental impact of a garment’s life is the energy needed to wash it in your washing machine and tumble dryer. Don’t wash clothes too often – is it really dirty?!

 Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died, Judith Hollister.  We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

The Bible Project

If you want an accessible and creative way of exploring the books of the Bible, then I can highly recommend The Bible Project. What is the Bible Project?

‘We are a nonprofit, crowdfunded organization that makes free resources like videospodcastsarticles, and classes to help people experience the Bible in a way that is approachable and transformative. We do this by showcasing the literary art of the Scriptures and tracing key biblical themes from Genesis to Revelation.’

The Bible Project have produced overviews on every book of the Bible and have a vast array of links to other study resources to help people engage with scripture. There are also loads of free, downloadable posters and images that you can use … here’s an example from the book of Ephesians:  Andy
