Upper Churchyard Working Parties
Help to keep our churchyard looking its best……do come and join us on our next dates for tidying up the upper churchyard. The next session is on Saturday 17th August from 9am.…… just an hour or two’s help makes a big difference and tasks are varied. All equipment and refreshments provided. Sessions will go ahead unless the weather is particularly unpleasant!
Date for diary – ‘Wildlife Walk’ – Sunday 8th September 2pm
Do please join us for a special ‘wildlife walk’ in the company of our resident botanist, Keith, who will show us the plants, birds and animals that are to be found in our local area at this time of year. Meet at the Church Car Park at 2pm, with refreshments at the end of the walk (which will be no longer than 2 hours). If the weather is particularly nasty the walk will be postponed to the following Sunday – 15th September. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna around us. Any queries speak to Keith or Helena (07909 882150)
Church Cleaning
It’s the time of year when a new church cleaning rota is being produced. I would like to thank all the people who give up their time to make sure that the church looks clean and welcoming each week. We have six teams at the moment. Each team cleans the church once every six weeks at a time to suit its members. If you think that you could give an hour or so every six week to help to keep our beautiful church clean please contact Janet Henderson (01793 525856).
Thank You – Filling Station Sandwiches
Kathy & Alan Gregory would like to thank everyone who contributed with making sandwiches last week for the Filling Station. Sadly the numbers are increasing so all help is much appreciated.
Volunteers – Little Lambs
Volunteers welcomed to join the friendly team at the long running Little Lambs, baby, toddler, pre-school and Parent/ cover group in Wroughton. Run by the Churches in Wroughton we rely on volunteers to set up, help with refreshments etc. Please speak to Peter & Karen Ferguson or Lyn Hezlett to find out more. We meet on Wednesday mornings at the Ellendune Centre.
Knitting squares
Are you the kind person who left a bag full of knitted squares in church recently? Unfortunately I can’t read the name on the note with them. Although they are not 6inch squares there are enough of them to be able to make a blanket of the size needed by the End of Life unit at Great Western Hospital.
Thank you. Janet Henderson 525856

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation
August – In your wardrobe
- Extend the life of your clothing and shoes by looking after them and mending. Wear them, use them, until they fall apart, then donate or recycle rather than binning old clothes and shoes.
- Set yourself a clothing challenge. Can you replenish your wardrobe for a year from second hand shops? (You may wish to exclude underwear!)
Funerals
We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died, David Pitter. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

FILLING STATION – NEWSLETTER JULY 2024
Half way through the year seemed like a good time to share our progress and perhaps the odd frustration!
ACCOUNTS
At the half year our accounts show Income of £7k and expenditure of £5,400 leaving a surplus of £1,600, which is half the amount we contribute to the Salvation army and the Drug & Alcohol support service annually. So far so good!
We have spent as much in this half year on food as we did in the entire year before, £4k. This is not just due to price increases but also reverting to four tins for each client, and we now prepare a bag for 70 clients each week. Our sandwich makers now make a total of 140 rounds each week.
St John’s, Haydon Wick have agreed to make us a recipient of their away giving for the next four years, which is great news. There is a great deal of “food” support available in Swindon, and it is needed. Regrettably it is unco-ordinated and is not, in general, supported by other interventions which address “homelessness”, which is why our relationship with CGL is so important. Angus Macpherson MBE, DL, Trustee, 3 Greens Lane, Wroughton Tel: 01793 812259. e-mail: macpherson.angus@btopenworld.com
SUPPORT
Thanks to all our supporters, those who pack bags, those who make sandwiches, those who drive the van & those who turn out in all weathers to serve on a Thursday evening.
Dauntsey’s School have visited us a couple of times in the year, bring around 15 students who took over the running of the project for a whole evening, and, by all accounts, learned a great deal from the experience. We hope the school will support us this coming Harvest Festival.
We have also been visited by the new leader of the Council, Jim Robbins and the new MP for Swindon South, Heidi Alexander. The new Bishop of Swindon is visiting in August.
CLIENTS
The average number of clients January 2024 to July 2024 was 63. Numbers have steadied increased, and on at least 6 weeks we have had over 70 clients. The highest week this year was in February at 75
Four counts have been held this year:
8/2/24 21/3/24 9/5/24 11/7/24
Private Rental 10 11 9 5
Local Authority / HA 15 26 21 18
Hostels (Booth & Culvery) 6 10 8 13
B&B or hotel 3 2 5 1
Sofa surfing 0 8 6 11
Rough sleeping 6 10 6 7
Total 40 67 51 55
In the July count only one client identified as a veteran. Of greater concern was a young lady who was eight months pregnant and living in a shed. Unfortunately, this was not a week that Swindon Borough Councils outreach workers were there. Angus Macpherson MBE, DL, Trustee, 3 Greens Lane, Wroughton Tel: 01793 812259. e-mail: macpherson.angus@btopenworld.com
Concern continues that clients were housed in Hostels with established benefit claims, and still were attending for food, as food is not provided in the hostels.
LEGGE HOUSE
No news about Legge House and we continue to operate from the garage, and luckily have some power still, but the situation is not satisfactory, and we continue to work toward a certain outcome with both the Diocese and Wroughton Parish Church.
SANDWICH MAKING ROTA
Unfortunately, two churches have withdrawn from the rota, Highworth Methodist and Westlea Church. The latter is closing and propose to gift some remaining funds to us. Our thanks to both communities for their support over the years.
This means we have some spaces to fill on the rota. There are about 16 groups who make the sandwich, and for many it’s a social get together as well.
We now cater for 70 clients, so need 140 rounds, individually wrapped and labelled are needed.
The popular ones are egg mayo, cheese and pickle, ham, tuna mayo
In addition the groups also donate two sliced loaves to use as wraps for the hot dogs, two litres of milk, and fruit, such as apples, bananas or small oranges.
The prepared sandwiches etc need then to be delivered to Queens Street Car Park on Thursday evening to coincide with the van’s arrival at 7pm
We have to follow food hygiene regulation, and can advise on these. Any food that is left over, is given to the residents of Booth House Angus Macpherson MBE, DL, Trustee, 3 Greens Lane, Wroughton Tel: 01793 812259. e-mail: macpherson.angus@btopenworld.com

There is only one person rota’d for a Thursday evening. Everyone else just “turns up”, and it is important to spend time talking with the clients as well as serving them.
We meet every Thursday, promptly, at 7pm in the delivery area / car park in Queens Street (very near the base of the Murray John Building and behind the Parade).
