Christmas reflections

This year we’re recommending the book ‘Women of the Nativity – An Advent and Christmas journey in nine stories’ by Paula Gooder. Each story is seven or eight pages long and is a piece of creative writing, backed by Paula Gooder’s work as a biblical scholar. We hope that they might help us to see the very familiar stories of Christmas through fresh eyes, perhaps noticing things that we hadn’t spotted before. Each one is accompanied by some questions for reflection or discussion and several of our small groups will using these. The stories will also be covered by our Sunday morning readings, so they will complement the messages from our preachers. The book is available for £10 from Church House Publishing (www.chpublishing.co.uk) and all good online bookshops. If online shopping isn’t your thing and you’d like us to order a copy on your behalf, then please speak to Janet in the church office.

The poem mentioned in Barbara’s talk last week

We Refugees

We can all be refugees

Nobody is safe.

All it takes is a mad leader

Or no rain to bring forth food.

We can all be refugees

We can all be told to go,

We can be hated by someone

For being someone.

We can all be refugees

Sometimes it only takes a day,

Sometimes it only takes a handshake

Or a paper that is signed.

We all came from refugees

Nobody simply just appeared,

Nobody’s here without a struggle,

And why should we live in fear

Of the weather or the troubles?

We all came here from somewhere.

GREEN OPEN HOMES WEEK 9TH TO 17TH  NOVEMBER

On Saturday 16th November, the church hall will be open between 1pm and 4pm as part of the Green Open Homes event (no, we know it’s not a home!). We will be showing how we cut our energy usage by over a half by improved insulation, draughtproofing and heating controls have reduced our energy usage, and our bills. We’ll also be demonstrating the effect of our solar panels. Do drop in to see what we have achieved, and to see if anything we have done would be applicable in our home.

There are a number of homes in the area open during the week, including two of members of our congregation, who can show new renewable heating methods. Booking is needed for visits to homes and can be done through www.wiltshireclimatealliance.org.uk/greenopenhomes. Or speak to Nick or Joan Orman or Helena Thomas.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

November – Around the home

  1. If in doubt switch to off: it is never more efficient to leave appliances running when you are not using them. Make sure you switch things off before you go out and before you go to bed.
  2. Ensure your heating is switch off at night and when you are away from your home (except in sub-zero conditions) and save 500kg CO2e a year. Don’t heat rooms you don’t use, turn the radiator off and close the door.

Income vs expenditure…

The PCC is currently in the process of setting our church’s budget for 2025. A key piece of information during this process is our financial performance during 2024, when we expect to make a loss of around £4k.

For those of you who like to see the details, and also for those of you who like to be reassured that the detail exists, the two pie charts below summarise our Church’s forecasted income and expenditure up to the end of 2024. Note that these summaries don’t include the accounts for the Church Hall (which just about breaks-even) or the church building repair fund. If you would like to see the full accounts then please do ask!

What is Parish Share?

As a church, our biggest item of expenditure is our Parish Share, which was £80k in 2023 and 2024. This is the money that we give to the Diocese of Bristol, of which we are a part. Parish share is the main source of income for the Diocese of Bristol, which employs parish clergy (their biggest expense), trains new clergy (like Chris Hunter) and provides central services that all parishes use like governance, safeguarding, support for clergy and lay ministers and support for our church schools. Bishops and cathedral clergy are funded centrally by the Church Commissioners.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Wednesday 13th November by Jean Lawton in memory of Edward Lawton.
