PRAY FOR SWINDON 2024

Saturday 18th May, 7pm-8:30pm at Christ Church, Old Town. We’d love to invite you and your church to join us to pray and give thanks for Swindon!

As local businesses, authorities and residents consult and plan on the future of the town, we want to respond to scripture’s encouragement to ‘Pray to the LORD for the city you live in’, by inviting God to bless this great city and pray for His kingdom to come and His will to be done here – that His salvation, light and healing would be known, seen and encountered in Swindon this year!

What might an ancient book have to say about life today?

Answering questions like this and ‘translating’ Christian theological tradition for those outside the church is tricky. So, if you’ve ever been stumped by this question, or wondered how to explain to a sceptic what it means to be ‘fully alive’, or, what kind of people do we need to be in these troubled and turbulent times, then here’s an opportunity to explore these with Elizabeth Oldfield, former Director of Theos, broadcaster and writer.  12.30 at Lower Shaw Farm, Old Shaw Lane, West Swindon, SN5 5PJ, on Thursday, 9 May. Tickets £8, available at:  https://www.waterstones.com/events/the-swindon-festival-of-literature-presents-a-talk-and-book-signing-with-elizabeth-oldfield/swindon

If you would like to help out in any way, for some or all of the days, we need support with craft, drama, refreshments and setting up. All helpers would be most welcome.  Please speak to Hannah or      Carolyn for further details.

Upper Churchyard Working Parties – volunteers please!

We will be working in the Upper Churchyard on the following dates:

The Big Hymn Sing

It is now over ten years since we had a ‘Songs of Praise’ event in Wroughton. Inspired by the Royal School of Church Music’s 2024 initiative, I am planning a hymn singing evening for Sunday 16th June at 6.00pm.

All welcome.   John Henderson 01793 525856.

Come and Sing Fauré’s Requiem

Cost is £20 to include score and light refreshments (not lunch). Some of our choir are intending to attend so some lift sharing may be possible.  There is a poster in the porch giving full details. Janet Henderson.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

May – Holiday highlights

  1. Have a “staycation” or use public transport to travel abroad. A return flight to Greece emits 1 tonne CO2e – your whole 2019 reduction target!
  2. Think twice before you book a cruise: the environmental impact is greater than a flight with CO2e emissions of 640g per person per mile.

Knitting for charity

This week I delivered these two colourful blankets to the End of Life unit at GWH. Thanks to the kind person who made the purple crocheted blanket and to the many people who made squares for the other blanket. Please keep knitting and crocheting squares. Remember that they should be DK yarn, not chunky, and no glitter, 15cm (6inches) square. I would particularly welcome shades of blue/ green and yellow to go with the oddments I’ve got at home. Many thanks. Janet Henderson 525856.

Notices from next week

Next week we will be using a different method of sending the notices which will mean that you will see the notices in the body of the email and you will be able to click a link to down load the service sheet.  If you do not receive this next week please contact the office by phone 812050 or email office@wroughton.com

Church Office

The office will be closed on Monday 13th & Tuesday 14th May and reopen on Wednesday 15th May.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Thursday 16th May by Sue Kuczynski in celebration of their son Luke who is getting married to Amy on Friday 17th May 2024.  His late father would be very proud of him.
