Sarah Heywood
We were saddened and surprised to hear that the Diocese had taken the decision to cut short Sarah’s stay with us at Wroughton and Wichelstowe and to return her to Malmesbury with immediate effect. The following statement has been given by way of explanation:
‘Sarah Heywood was very grateful for the time spent with the congregation at Wroughton and Wichelstowe. Although this was a short curacy placement it still provided an opportunity to experience something of the life and ministry that is happening in the Church. With hindsight, the timing of a curacy placement unfortunately happened too close to the end of the IME 2 programme, being prepared to be signed-off Sarah’s curacy and her vocational discernment of next steps. The decision was made that, for these reasons, Sarah would focus on her training parish while she completes her curacy.’
Sarah very much appreciated her welcome here and made a significant contribution to our Church community despite the brevity of her stay. We thank her for her input and care and pray for God’s blessing upon her future ministry.
Refreshment Sunday
March 30th the 4th Sunday in Lent is both Mothering Sunday and Refreshment Sunday.
Traditionally this is a celebration day within the otherwise austere period of Lent.
Our celebration this year will take the form of a light breakfast between our 8am and 10am services. It is intended that this will be one of a series of social events over the coming months which will give us the opportunity of getting to know each other better and all are encouraged to stay on or to come early to enjoy this event.
Croissants and similar will be available from 8.50 until 9.45. Please bring your own cup or mug!
Bible recommendation for children
Last Sunday Revd Phill recommended The Lion Storyteller Bible as an ideal gift for children. It contains 70 retellings of bible stories especially designed to be read aloud and is therefore ideal as a bedtime story for any small people that you may know. This is the bible that we use when the Open the Book team visits our primary schools for assemblies and also one of the bibles that we give to older children when they are christened (reading age 5-9). Available online and from all good bookshops.
Lent resources
Two of our small groups have recommended some resources that you might like to use during your journey through Lent:
- If you enjoyed the book that we used during Advent and Epiphany ‘Women of the Nativity’ by Paula Gooder, then you might also enjoy ‘Women of Holy Week – An Easter Journey in Nine Stories’ by the same author. Nick and Joan’s group will be using this.
- Carolyn and Lorna’s group will be using resources from 24-7 prayer, based around the book ‘Be Still’ by Brian Heasley. This is a prayer book for anyone – small groups, Bible studies, youth leaders and teenagers – looking for ways to make space for and revitalise the way they pray. Eco Church News:
Litter Picking
Earlier this month a few valiant souls braved the elements to litter pick up Priors Hill, ending up near Alexandra Park. It can be depressing to see the amount of litter that thoughtless people either deliberately dump or throw out of car windows etc and Priors Hill was no exception. However, the more people care about this and act to clean it up, the pleasanter our villages and countryside will be…… and why should we let the litter vandals win!
From 21st March to 6 April is ‘The Great British Spring Clean’, organised by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and we will be organising another litter pick, and pledging our support as a church – details nearer the time. Thank you to all those who already litter pick on a regular basis around the village. And if you do see fly-tipping, report it to Wroughton Parish Council either online or in person – they are usually very good at responding and clearing it.
Book & Jigsaw Swap
As part of our commitment to ‘Reuse & Recycle’ this popular event will again take place in church during Lent, starting on Sunday 23rd March so please do have a good sort out and donate any unwanted books or jigsaws. Details on where and how nearer the time……

At Wroughton Parish Church Hall, Materials and Refreshments provided
This workshop should give you what you need to start or progress with your love of pastel drawing.
There will be a step-by-step guide to help you complete your painting of a March Hare in your own unique way.
Specialist Pastel paper will be provided and cut so your masterpiece can be easily framed afterwards. I will bring along my soft pastels to choose your colour scheme, but I suggest you invest in a basic kit to get used to your own materials if you haven’t done so already.
There will be a small class size to keep learning high and I am happy to help you with additional pastel images if you bring them with you and time permits. Painting with pastel can sometimes be quick, like a sketch or meticulously detailed so the timings for completion will vary.
