Revd Phill’s availability
As many people will know, I have been living with Long Covid since contracting Covid in March 2022. This has had a significant impact on my energy levels and also on my cognitive ability when I’m tired. I have now had an Occupational Health assessment and the doctor has recommended that I continue with a part-time working pattern (25 hours per week), with a further Occupational Health review in six months. I have also been told to take regular breaks during the day, including an afternoon nap, and to avoid evening meetings where possible. The Archdeacon and diocesan HR team are supportive of this. I find that the morning is the best time of day for me, when I’m then able to work normally for 3 or 4 hours before needing to rest and sleep. Going forwards, my working pattern will be 8 or 9am to 1pm Sun, Mon, Tue, Weds, Thurs, with an additional hour to be worked flexibly during the afternoon or evening. By continuing to manage my illness in this way I hope that I will be able to work sustainably and avoid further long periods of absence. Thank you for your patience and your prayers. Phill.
An update from our Ordinand Martina Lewis
Hello Everyone, Just a little update. Due to having a seizure in June I am not allowed to drive for one year. I am now on placement with Revd. Lydia Morey in the parish of Upper Stratton /Penhill until 31st of May 2025. The Parish is easily accessible by bus and offers me a chance to observe different worship styles and leadership. I miss you all and hope to be back on the 1st of June next year. In Christ, Martina.

Join in the mission – Pumpkin Party – Saturday 2nd November
On Saturday 2nd November from 11.30am to 1.00pm we will be having a Pumpkin Party in the Church Hall. This is a family event for the village as an alternative to Halloween and the organisers need more people to make it work. There will be crafts, games and food. All the craft and games will be set up but we need people to oversee them and we need people in the kitchen to set out food make drinks and wash up. No special skills are needed but a willingness to chat would be good. There is a sign-up list in church and nearer the time we will be asking for volunteers to supply some of the food. Barbara

Income vs expenditure…
The PCC is currently in the process of setting our church’s budget for 2025. A key piece of information during this process is our financial performance during 2024, when we expect to make a loss of around £4k.
For those of you who like to see the details, and also for those of you who like to be reassured that the detail exists, the two pie charts below summarise our Church’s forecasted income and expenditure up to the end of 2024. Note that these summaries don’t include the accounts for the Church Hall (which just about breaks-even) or the church building repair fund. If you would like to see the full accounts then please do ask!
Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation
October – What’s on the menu?
- Think about your food before it reaches your table. 45% of the carbon emissions from food comes from production (on the farm), 28% in food processing, 7% in packaging and 19% from transport. Home grown has the lowest carbon footprint!
- Stick to tap water. Bottled water comes with a 320g per litre carbon footprint, whereas tap water is a mere 0.24g CO2e per litre. If you don’t like the taste of your home tap water, install an under the sink water filter.
Floodlighting
The Church will be floodlit on Sunday 20th October by Duncan Barclay in memory of his wife, Alison Barclay.
Funerals
We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died, Cecilia Margaret Lewis and Jose Margaret Pont. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Introduction
I know that the church’s accounts are not the easiest to understand, but they are a legal requirement.
Fund accounting
The accounts include a number of different funds; each one is like a cocoa tin on the mantlepiece. We have two types of fund – Designated funds, which the PCC may use for any purpose, but which may be reserved for one particular purpose, and Restricted funds which the PCC may only use for the purpose specified by the original donor.
Overview of 2023
If you add up all our funds then we ended 2023 with around £14,000 less than we started, but this hides the complexity of what was going on. To understand these, we need to look at the most significant funds.
General Fund
This fund is used for most of the day-to-day expenditure of the PCC. This ended the year with a very small surplus of £2,665. Our expenditure was £1,000 less than budget, but it was significantly more than 2022 because of an increase in energy and other costs. Our income was also significantly ahead of budget and ahead of 2022 this was mainly due to increased open plate giving.
Buildings Funds
These are funds used for the repair of our buildings. Some of the funds are restricted to maintenance of the church building, others may be used for either the church building or the church hall. Some funds are designated. During the year electrical works were carried out on the church at a cost of £4,035 and the major replastering works were commenced. These were estimated to cost £34,000 but various problems have been encountered causing delay and further as yet unquantified costs. Payments of £20,234 were made during the year with a further £13,389 being paid early in 2024. It is likely that it will cost a further £10,000 to complete the work. At the end of the year, we had £21,464 in these funds of which only £8,075 is now left so we will need to raise more funds to finish the work.
The situation in 2024
In the general fund it looks like we will make a loss of £3,820 at the end of the year. This is primarily due to a reduction in planned giving and tax recovered which is expected to be nearly £4,000 over the year as people have moved away.
The church hall may break even.
Looking further forward to 2025
We need to ensure we can pay our way including ensuring that we pay our proper share of the diocesan costs which is used to pay the clergy and their housing as well as the central services that they provide for us.
We will need to continue set a budget to reflect the reality of our likely income. We need to raise an additional £8,000 to cover the amount those who have moved away would have given over a full year. If you are able to start giving to the church or increase the amount you give this would help. If you pay tax and would be able to change the way you give so that we can reclaim that tax, that would also be helpful.
We also need to plan to raise money to pay for major work including major repairs to the South Ailse which was identified in our quinquennial inspection of the church by our new architect has identified the need for significant roof works to the south aisle.
