MESSAGE FROM PHILL

Dear all,

Thank you for your prayers and kind wishes whilst I’ve been off work. I am recovering from the Long Covid relapse I experienced in February and I aim to be back with you from Monday 28th April.

I will be coming back to work part-time, as I was before, but with a different working pattern, which reflects the advice given by the Occupational Therapist over the last couple of months. My new pattern will be 20 hours, spread over four days: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. During the day I will be taking several long breaks from work, working for no more than 1.5 hours at a time and spreading work out across the day. The aim is to avoid becoming over-tired and repeating my previous ‘boom and bust’ cycle. I will also be taking Tuesday off work in addition to Friday and Saturday, meaning that I won’t be working more than two days consecutively and will hopefully therefore avoid energy crashes on my days off.

Sadly, there is no little pill or ‘shot in the arm’ that treats Long Covid. Long Covid is a complex syndrome that affects people in many different ways and the length of recovery varies from person to person, depending on the symptoms they experience. There are some common symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive disruption, breathlessness and impact on mental health. There are also a wide range of other symptoms that have an individual presentation. The effects of Long Covid are continuing for longer than medical professionals had expected, however people are making a gradual recovery. During this recovery, setbacks and flare up of symptoms can occur. The treatment approach recommended for managing Long Covid symptoms is frequent restorative rest breaks during the day and one daily targeted relaxation session alongside pacing, planning, and prioritizing all daily activities in relation to energy demand. Doing too much too soon will hinder recovery. In this respect, Long Covid is similar to ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

If you’re interested in finding out more about Long Covid then the NHS website is a good starting point: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/covid-19/long-term-effects-of-covid-19-long-covid/ If you have any questions about my return to work then please speak to our Churchwardens Peter and Lynn.

Phill

Thank You

We would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with preparing the church building and taking part in services during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. All your hard work has been much appreciated by many people.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) and meeting to Elect Churchwardens

These meetings will be held in church on Sunday 11th May starting at 11am, immediately following Morning Worship.  There will be vacancies on the Parochial Church Council (PCC), so please pray about whether you might be called to volunteer for this role.  If you have been on the Electoral Roll for at least six months and would like to stand for election, nomination forms are available from either the Parish Office or Lorna Robinson (lornar246@gmail.com) or at the back of church.  If you are interested or would like more information, please speak to any of the current PCC members or to Phill, after his return to work.

From the Diocese – The Right Revd. Neil Warwick confirmed as Acting Bishop of Bristol.

The Diocese of Bristol is delighted to announce the appointment of the Rt Revd Neil Warwick, Suffragan Bishop of Swindon, as Acting Diocesan Bishop of this diocese with effect from 2 September 2025. Bishop Neil will serve in this capacity throughout the Vacancy in See following the retirement of the Rt Revd Vivienne Faull on 1 September 2025. Bishop Neil will bring many years of experience to this role having served as parish priest, Archdeacon of Bristol and Suffragan Bishop. In his leadership as Acting Diocesan Bishop he will be a reassuring presence with a current understanding of the missional opportunities and pastoral needs across the Diocese of Bristol.

In response to this news, Bishop Neil said:

“It will be a privilege to serve as the Acting Diocesan Bishop of our diocese. In the vacancy we can draw on the strength and faithfulness of one another as, upheld by prayer, we continue to serve our communities. I am deeply grateful to Bishop Viv for her faithful and visionary presence and for all that she has nurtured and grown in this diocese.”  The people of every worshipping community within the Diocese of Bristol are invited to pray for both Bishop Viv and Bishop Neil in this season of change.

New Diocesan requirement for all childrens’ workers

Domestic Abuse Awareness Training

We are running a Domestic Abuse Awareness course over Zoom rather than in person for those who want to access it in a group setting rather than through the online e-learning portal. The morning long session is taking place on Wednesday 21 May at 10.00am.

From 1 January 2025 it is no longer a requirement for PCC members to undertake this training. However, it is now required that everybody working with children, young people and vulnerable adults undertakes this course. For anybody currently in one of these roles there is a 3 year timescale to implement this change, i.e. until January 2028. For those newly recruited to roles, they should complete the training requirements within 6 months of starting.

Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died, Pope Francis. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

A prayer for Pope Francis

Merciful Lord,

We praise you that we are made in your image

And reflect your truth and light.

We thank you for the life of Pope Francis,

For the love he received from you

And showed among us.

Above all, we rejoice at your gracious promise

To all your servants, living and departed,

That we shall rise again at the coming of Christ.

And we ask that in due time

We may share with Pope Francis that clearer vision,

When we shall see your face

In the same Christ our Lord.

Amen
