Christmas reflections
This year we’re recommending the book ‘Women of the Nativity – An Advent and Christmas journey in nine stories’ by Paula Gooder. Each story is seven or eight pages long and is a piece of creative writing, backed by Paula Gooder’s work as a biblical scholar. We hope that they might help us to see the very familiar stories of Christmas through fresh eyes, perhaps noticing things that we hadn’t spotted before. Each one is accompanied by some questions for reflection or discussion and several of our small groups will using these. The stories will also be covered by our Sunday morning readings, so they will complement the messages from our preachers. The book is available for £10 from Church House Publishing (www.chpublishing.co.uk) and all good online bookshops. If online shopping isn’t your thing and you’d like us to order a copy on your behalf, then please speak to Janet in the church office.
Healing team members meeting
There will be a healing team members meeting on Wednesday 27th November at 10.30am at the vicarage.

The poem mentioned in Barbara’s talk
We Refugees
We can all be refugees
Nobody is safe.
All it takes is a mad leader
Or no rain to bring forth food.
We can all be refugees
We can all be told to go,
We can be hated by someone
For being someone.
We can all be refugees
Sometimes it only takes a day,
Sometimes it only takes a handshake
Or a paper that is signed.
We all came from refugees
Nobody simply just appeared,
Nobody’s here without a struggle,
And why should we live in fear
Of the weather or the troubles?
We all came here from somewhere.

GREEN OPEN HOMES WEEK 9TH TO 17TH NOVEMBER
On Saturday 16th November, the church hall will be open between 1pm and 4pm as part of the Green Open Homes event (no, we know it’s not a home!). We will be showing how we cut our energy usage by over a half by improved insulation, draughtproofing and heating controls have reduced our energy usage, and our bills. We’ll also be demonstrating the effect of our solar panels. Do drop in to see what we have achieved, and to see if anything we have done would be applicable in our home.
There are a number of homes in the area open during the week, including two of members of our congregation, who can show new renewable heating methods. Booking is needed for visits to homes and can be done through www.wiltshireclimatealliance.org.uk/greenopenhomes. Or speak to Nick or Joan Orman or Helena Thomas.
Floodlighting
The Church will be floodlit on Monday 18th November by Cheryl Cowley in memory of her late husband, Francis Edward Cowley. One year since you were taken from me;
On Wednesday 20th November by Rosina Stevens in memory of her late husband Ron Stevens;
On Thursday 21st November by Bill & Doreen Greenshields in memory of their beloved son, Andrew Greenshields.
Funerals
We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have died, Jennifer Titcombe and Stephanie Priest. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.
Dear friends,
In my former national role as one of the bishops leading the Church of England’s safeguarding development, I became aware of the lengthy—and, as we now see, thorough—investigation by Keith Makin into the horrific abuse perpetrated by John Smyth.
The Makin report makes devastating reading, and I am deeply perturbed by the extensive abuse of children and young people, as well as the fact that the abuse was known to some over many years. I acknowledge with profound shame that the Church harboured this abuser and that, once the abuse became known, bishops failed to act to prevent further appalling harm. I apologise to those who have suffered and continue to suffer, and I remain committed to addressing these issues.
This is why we must all remain dedicated to the positive changes made in the Diocese of Bristol, especially at the parish level, where volunteers have worked tirelessly to foster the cultural changes needed to make our churches safer, prevent harm, and support those impacted by abuse. This vital, transformative work—led by the Parish Safeguarding Officers, churchwardens and many other dedicated volunteers across our parish communities—has been rigorously tested and commended in the recent independent audit.
For my part, I will continue working to ensure that anyone experiencing abuse feels safe to come forward, knowing they will be believed, supported, and that their concerns will be acted upon.
Yours in Christ,
