Open the Book Feedback from Wroughton Infants School

We have now received feedback from the Infant School which is as follows:-

Beau:                     I like the actions, funny sounds and the book.

Mailee:                  I like learning about Jesus and his stories.

Altsha:                   My favourite was when they ‘catched’ all the fish.

Masie:                   I like that they actually get the people that were there in the story.

Ibrahini:                Because they do the most amazing stories (and I know Barbara!)

Churchyard Committee – help needed

Thank you very much to all who helped with the recent Churchyard tidy up.  You did a fantastic and much appreciated job!

We are currently in the situation where we are in need of some admin and liaison help with organising the duties that our church has responsibility for in our cherished Churchyard.  These tasks are done by the Churchyard Committee, which reports to the  PCC, but you DO NOT have to be a member of the PCC to be involved.  The Committee only meets twice a year, when it conducts an inspection of the Churchyard and discusses current issues.  There is a small amount of work between meetings.  The roles that currently need filling are:

  1. A new chair person (must be from the PCC)
  2. Someone to take the minutes
  3. Someone to organise occasional working parties for the Upper Churchyard
  4. Someone to be the liaison with Swindon Borough Council

A volunteer has kindly come forward for 2 and 3.  If you feel you can help with either of the others, or would like to serve on the Committee in a general capacity, please contact any member of the PCC.

Vacancy in See Consultation

As we prepare for the retirement of Bishop Viv this September, we are entering a significant period of discernment for the Diocese of Bristol. Your spiritual insights and experiences as members of the family of God in this place are vital to this process. You are invited to take part in a short (5 minute) on-line survey to help shape the vision and priorities for our next bishop. You can find the form here:

Prospect Hospice Starlight Walk 2025

Jean Ford and Janet Henderson are taking part in the Prospect Hospice’s Starlight Walk on 28 June 2025. We would be grateful for your sponsorship to support our local hospice. You can donate by going to prospecthospice.enthuse.com and searching for either of our names or we would be happy to accept cash which we can then pay into our fundraising accounts. Thank you.

‘Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust Ride and Stride – Saturday 13th September 2025 – Help needed!

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday 13th September. As for the last many years, I am happy to be administrator for the event for our Parish. However, due to a holiday commitment, I will be away for the event itself. I am thus inviting help!

Our job on the day is to have the Church open with the toilet available (easy wins!), and to have someone on hand to sign sponsorship forms of riders/walkers visiting our Church between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm. In past years, Tracy and me have done most of the form signing coverage. If you can spare an hour or two to come to the Church that day and be on hand to sign the sponsorship forms of visiting riders/walkers, direct them to the wc if required, that would be really appreciated. Due to our position at the top of a hill, visitor numbers are usually not high and the session is likely to allow you to enjoy the quiet of our Church and Churchyard for most of your stint! If you are able to assist, I would be really grateful. If you could please let me know via email or mobile to: masonmj@ntlworld.com or 07899 041596. I will also leave a volunteer sheet on the Church Chest, if that is preferred. Thank you!’

Knitting for Mission to Seafarers

Last week I sent a box of hats and scarves to this charity and received this lovely email.

“Just to let you know we have safely received your parcel of 31 hats and 7 scarves.

Could you please forward our grateful thanks to the ladies of Wroughton & Wichelstowe parish church, who knit them, the seafarers really appreciate them. I attach a pattern for neck warmers.

Kind regards, Dianne “

Thank you to all who knitted hats and scarves.  I will print out some neck warmer patterns and put them in the box by the choir vestry.  Janet Henderson

Letter from the Diocese of Bristol

Dear friends at

St John Baptist and St Helen

Wroughton & Wichelstowe

Your Parish Share gifts in 2024 amounted to

£80,000

We would like to thank all of you in the parish of St John Baptist and St Helen Wroughton &

Wichelstowe for your contributions to Parish Share in 2024, and for you pledge of support for the coming year. Your faithful commitment is very much valued and a certificate is enclosed as a symbol of our appreciation.

In 2024 parishes reported that they:

  • Conducted approximately 1,200 school assemblies.
  • Ran 32 Messy Church or a similar type of service.
  • Baptised 700 people.
  • Married 250 couples.
  • Conducted 1,200 funerals.
  • Welcomed 7,750 adults and 1,200 children on a usual Sunday.
  • Counted approximately 15,660 as being a part of their worshipping communities.

Without the generous financial support of parish share by PCCs and congregations the activities and ministries hinted at above may not have been possible. Your contribution to Parish Share has either provided, supported or enabled parish ministry across the diocese, for which we give thanks to our Heavenly Father.

May God be with you at St John Baptist and St Helen Wroughton & Wichelstowe as you seek to share the love of Christ with those around you.

With prayers and best wishes in Christ

The Ven Christopher Bryan             The Ven Becky Waring         The Rev’d Adam Beaumont
