Covid-19…

The government recently took the decision to relax some of the legal Covid restrictions. However, levels of Covid remain high and some people continue to be vulnerable. Different people will have different attitudes to risk. Love and generosity are key principles in the way that we live together and meet as one body in Christ. To help everyone to feel comfortable and safe in church we are continuing to ask people to take these precautions:

  • Please wear a mask unless medically exempt, particularly while singing. You may remove your mask to eat or drink, but please replace it afterwards.
  • Please be aware of social distancing and respect the wishes of those who might need a bit more space than you do. If you want to be socially distanced then please avoid the pews in the rear of the nave.
  • The church building is being regularly cleaned and ventilated.
  • Please use the hand sanitiser provided.

The Children’s Society Box Opening

If you are a Children’s Society boxholder and you would like to have your box emptied, please could you let me have your box by 20th February if at all possible. I am in church most Sundays at the 10am service or you can contact me, Carolyn Kirk on 07596001716 to arrange a time for me to collect it.  Thankyou

New small-group

We want to be a church where everyone feels known and connected to other members of the worshipping community. We also want to be a church where people feel encouraged and supported in their faith. A really good way of achieving both of these things is by having as many people as possible involved in small-groups that meet for an hour or two at some point during the week. Covid willing, we will be launching a new small-group at the end of January, meeting in the Church Hall. Look out for more details…

Safeguarding – Looking after each other

Safeguarding is about creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment within which children, young people and vulnerable adults can be nurtured and cared for. The Vicar and the Parish Safeguarding Officer (Mark Tubey) both have key roles to play, but this isn’t their responsibility alone. It is the responsibility of all members of our church to have an awareness of some basic good practice, of the types of abuse that can occur and what to do when you have a concern, either for yourself or someone else. Attached with this notice-sheet is a brief safeguarding summary, which will help you to be informed about this important topic. Please do take the time to read it.  Thank you. Revd Phill.

Swindon Interfaith group – a request

Is there a way that we could invite some representation from the Anglican community onto the Swindon Interfaith Group committee, or to attend the events we hold? Regarding the committee, a faith representative doesn’t have to be a church official, indeed most of our committee members are lay members of their faith community but have an interest in building interfaith relations. Our committee currently includes members who associate with the following faith groups: Baha’i, Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, Latter-day Saints, Pagan, Quaker, Roman Catholic, Sikh, and Unification. Please let Rev Phill know if this is something you would be interested in.

Coffee Team

The coffee team urgently need some help on Sundays please. We are becoming a little depleted as a team and the more volunteers we have the fewer turns we have to do on the rota. Don’t worry if you don’t have a dishwasher/ car we all help each other. All you need to do is provide the milk occasionally. Please talk to a member of the coffee team if you think you can help. Thank you, Sally Parker

Knitting for Charity

Unfortunately Mission to Seafarers is still unable to take any more knitted hats, scarves, gloves etc. If you are still keeping some at home can I suggest that you take them to your local charity shop.

A local project  you can support is to be a Brighter Futures Blanketeer. They ask for knitted or crocheted blankets 120 x 150 cm (4 ft x5xft) which will be offered to patients in the last few days of their lives to make their room seem more homely. Completed blankets should not have glittery wool and should be washed gently when complete.

If a whole blanket seems like too big a task please make 15cm (6inch) squares and bring them into church. There is a box near the piano to put them in.  (Thanks to those who have already done so). Myself and a friend will complete the blankets and get them to the hospital. If possible a crocheted butterfly should be added to each completed blanket. For further details go to brighterfuturesgwh.nhs.uk.

Thank you Janet Henderson 01793 525856

This is a photo of the first blanket for GWH made from donated wool. Several people have recently donated a  total of 142 squares. Thank you all very much. The next job is to decide how to arrange the squares and join them up. Please keep knitting and if you don’t t knit but would like to take part balls of DK wool

( not glittery) can be left in the box by the choir vestry at church.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

 JANUARY

  • Switch to using a green search engine on the internet such as ecosia.org , which plants trees to absorb the carbon emissions from your web searches.
  • Email with care: an email generates 4g CO2e and a large email with lots of attachments up to 50g. Don’t stop communicating, but think before you copy everyone in!

Photos for the notices

Don’t forget  you are still able to send me photos of any interesting pictures you take on your travels to put in the notices.  Janet

What to do if you are concerned that abuse or neglect may be happening

You may see or hear something of concern or someone may tell you something of concern (a disclosure).  If a child, young person or adult tells you that they have experienced abuse, are experiencing abuse or are concerned that they may be at risk:

Do Don’t
Listen. Try to move to a quiet space if possible Don’t Tell them to speak to someone else
Let the person talk at their own pace and say what they want to say. If you need to clarify points ask open questions like:

Tell me.. what happened,

Explain … about the incident

Describe …where it was/what happened

Don’t Investigate.

Ask leading questions e.g. why did they do that, was it ‘name’, did it hurt you?

Take it seriously Don’t Try not to react as though unbelieving or shocked
Reassure. Confirm they are doing the right thing by telling you. Don’t Tell them not to tell stories
Tell them you need to share the concern with the right people e.g. Parish Safeguarding Officer, police, social care Don’t Promise to keep a secret or tell people who don’t need to know.
Record what was said and the facts as accurately as possible as soon as possible Don’t Try to just remember it
Contact authorities/Parish Safeguarding Officer (Mark Tubey). Don’t Contact the person the allegation is about
