Diocese launches Statement of Needs ahead of Bishop appointment process
The Diocese of Bristol has released its Statement of Needs, a comprehensive and prayerfully discerned document outlining the vision, priorities, and aspirations for the next Bishop of Bristol.
Following an extensive consultation involving over 1,200 voices from across the Diocese (including clergy, lay leaders, youth groups, and diverse communities) the Statement of Needs reflects a shared longing for a bishop who is a relational, visionary, and rooted in prayer. It sets out the qualities, leadership areas, and strategic challenges that will shape the next phase of episcopal ministry in the Diocese.
You can read the statement of needs at https://www.bristol.anglican.org/news/statement-of-needs.php
PRAYER MEETING
On the last Tuesday of each month, a group of us meet in the church hall to pray for our community of Wroughton and Wichelstowe. The meeting begins at 7.30pm and lasts for an hour. Please come along if you are able, the next meeting is this coming Tuesday 30 September.
Creationtide
During September Christians across the world celebrate the Season of Creation, or ‘Creationtide’. As Christians, we are called to be truth-tellers and hope-bearers. The climate and ecological crisis is real and urgent, but it is not without hope if we act together. By engaging with Creationtide, we remind ourselves and others of the need to move beyond ignorance, apathy, and paralysis into prayerful, faithful action. Even small steps can make a big difference.
Harvest breakfast in church – Sunday 5th October
The next breakfast in church will be held at Harvest Thanksgiving, on Sunday 5th October. A continental breakfast will be served in church between the two morning services, from 8.50am to 9.45am. Hot drinks, fruit juices, warm croissants, toast and preserves will be available to enjoy! Everyone is warmly invited! It will be a great opportunity to chat to old friends and make new ones.
Harvest Gifts – Sunday 5th October
Our harvest celebrations will be taking place on Sunday 5th October and we will be collecting gifts for the Filling Station as usual. Filling Station is a weekly initiative that has been running for many years to help homeless and insecurely housed people in Swindon. It’s a mobile kitchen that sets up in central Swindon every Thursday from 7pm – 8:15pm. A team serves soup, hot and cold drinks, hotdogs, and a variety of cakes and biscuits, while building relationships and just talking to the people who come along. In addition to this, the team are able to hand out to each attendee a ‘care package’ which contains a variety of basic essentials ranging from toothbrushes to blankets, that help them get through the week. Please see the back page of the notice sheet for a list of suggested donations.
The Filling Station – Sandwiches, Thursday 16th October 2025
Our church has been asked to do a swap so we will be supplying sandwiches etc. for the homeless via the Filling Station on Thursday 16th October July. This means we won’t be needed to do it again until next year! If you would be willing to prepare a loaf of sandwiches or supply something else, please add your name to the signup sheet on the church chest and take a reminder card. Please note that the food needs to be taken to 11 Blenheim Road (Alan and Kathy Gregory’s).
Date for you diary
A few of our 8 o’clock congregation have decided to get together on Wednesday October 8th at 11.30am for a light lunch at the Prospect Hospice Café.
Please join us if you can. Christine Wrixon.
Alternative for Halloween
We are planning a Pumpkin Party on Friday 31st October starting at 11.30 am. If you are able to help by coming along to the Church Hall and chatting to children and parents or helping with craft please let Barbara know. We will ask for food donations nearer the time.

REFRESHMENTS AFTER 10 AM SERVICE
Many thanks to all those who have provided us with delicious cakes and bakes for our refreshments after the 10 am service, it’s much appreciated. We thought to ensure don’t have lots of cakes on one day and none on others we could provide a sign up sheet….just add your name if you’re able to provide cake on a certain Sunday. The first sheet to cover October will be in church at the end of the month. No pressure as there will always be biscuits available if no one brings cake!
THE BIBLE COURSE
The Tuesday study group which meets at the church hall is going to be studying “The Bible Course” from Bible Society. This is an eight session course which looks at the big picture of the Bible, and how the stories fit together.
If anyone would like to join the group for this course (or longer) please speak to Nick or Joan Orman.
FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2nd September – 5th October 2025
Our church is registered as a Fairtrade Church, and has committed to use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar at all our events, but what does this mean?
Fairtrade is more than a label on your coffee or bananas – it’s a way to make trade work better for the people behind our favourite products.
The Fairtrade Foundation works with small-scale farmers and workers around the world to build a fairer trade system – one where they can earn a decent income, work in safe conditions, and invest in their futures as they see fit.
Here’s just some of what they do:
Fairer prices: They set a Minimum Price, a safety net that protects farmers and workers when market prices fall, but still allows them to earn more when prices rise.
Fairtrade Premium: This sets them apart. Farmers and workers receive the Premium – extra money which they decide how to invest, whether it’s for schools, healthcare, or farming improvements.
Fairer working rights: Their standards include rights at work, safe conditions, and democratic structures in producer cooperatives, ensuring farmers and workers have a stronger voice.
Building sustainable futures: They support smallholder farms to adopt climate-smart practices, improve crop quality, and invest in their long-term resilience.
Ethical business partnerships: They work with brands, retailers, and governments, advising on ethical sourcing, certification, trade policy, and supply chain integrity.
Campaigning for trade justice: Through grassroot campaigner groups and lobbying, they build public support and push for fairer trade policies and practices.
This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is focussing on tea. What brand do you buy? Is it Fairtrade certified? Many of the brands in our supermarkets are, even some of the own-label ones. Could you try a Fairtrade brand during this fortnight? We may be familiar with Fairtrade labels on foods such as tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate and bananas, but did you know that you can also buy clothes and household goods made with Fairtrade cotton, jute, wool and rubber, or crafted from recycled materials? Our actions can help work for a fairer world.
