Welcome service for the new Bishop of Swindon
Bishop Viv is delighted to announce that this will take place on Advent Sunday, 3 December 2023 at 6.30pm in Christ Church Swindon. All are warmly invited to attend to welcome Neil as he begins his new ministry as our suffragan bishop. Bishop Neil will then visit many parishes over the course of 2024.

Harvest gifts
Our harvest celebration will take place on Sunday 1st October. As in previous years, we will be collecting items for The Filling Station, a charity with which we have long-standing connection. The Filling Station serve some of the most needy people in Swindon and for that reason they have a very specific list of things that they need, which you can find on the back page.
Tear Fund Quiz
The TEAR Fund Quiz is running again this year on Saturday October 7th. Doors open at 6.45pm and hot food will be served from 7. Teams of 6-8 people may be entered by giving names to the Church Office or email office@wroughton.com from where tickets priced £10 may be obtained. All proceeds towards TEAR Fund.
Replastering the church
The failing gypsum plaster on the lower half of the walls at the western end of the church was removed during lockdown in July 2020. A significant (and very expensive!) amount of work was then done on the outside of the walls replacing cement based mortar with lime mortar, which allows the wall to breathe. After waiting for the walls to dry out, and a couple of false starts with architects and builders, we are now ready to put lime plaster back on the inside. This work will take a number of months, as each layer of plaster needs drying time before the next can be applied. There will be some mess and disruption, but we’re hopeful that this work will be finished before Christmas. Replastering will cost circa £34K and will use up all of the remaining money in our church building fund. Any further work (e.g. replacing the South aisle roof, interior decoration, accessibility improvements) will require fund raising.
Pastoral Care
September is always a good time for new beginnings and assessing what we are currently doing. As a church, one of our priorities is ensuring that every member of our community feels appreciated and valued. In the gospels, Jesus always takes the time to recognise each individual, their needs and their situations, never skimming over people or overlooking them. We want to be the same.
Part of this is provided through small groups: We would love everyone to be part of a small group, where they can explore issues of faith more deeply than is possible on a Sunday morning and can engage in regular bible study alongside other Christians. We also have a pastoral visiting team, whose primary aim is to make sure people who are not able to attend worship regularly are visited and still feel included as part of the community.
If you would value being visited, or you know someone who would, please let me know. Also, if you don’t know about the pastoral visiting team or would like more information, or if you think we can improve how we think about pastoral care, I’d love to talk to you. I am always happy to have a chat about this area of our ministry, either after a Sunday service or over coffee during the week. Revd Chris
Autumn Ramble
Come and join our Eco Church group on an autumn walk on Saturday 14th October at 2pm, meeting at the Church Hall, Priors Hill. The walk will be no longer than 3 miles, with tea & cake after. This is a lovely opportunity to take in the autumnal beauty of our local surroundings, in good company and with time to chat.
(The leader has assured us that the route will have been planned and walked beforehand – and that there will be no nettles!!)
Mission to Seafarers knitting
I have had a message from Mission to Seafarers asking for more knitted hats as the weather gets colder. There is lots of spare wool and some patterns in the box by the choir vestry if you would like to get knitting. Many thanks Janet Henderson 525856
Book & Jigsaw Swap
As part of Creationtide we’re encouraging ‘Recycle & Re-Use’ with a book and jigsaw swap. Please bring any unwanted books or jigsaws and place them in the plastic containers near the bookcase in the Baptistry. There will be a table set up to browse the donations on the next few Sundays (for all services). Please take any that appeal. All leftover books and jigsaws will be donated to a local charity or sent to the ‘Books for Africa’ charity. Enjoy! Eco-Church Group
Bookcase in Church
The bookcase in Church is now overflowing as Christian reading books have been transferred there from Legge House. In 2012 The Diocese had been intending to use Legge as a local resource base for ministers, ordinands and lay although it never formally happened due to a change of leadership in The Diocesan Board of Education. Brighter Futures blankets.
Here are photos of the two blankets delivered to the End of Life unit at GWH recently. Also six beautiful baby blankets for the Neonatal unit at GWH. Many thanks to all who have contributed knitted or crocheted squares for the large blankets. Please remember that they should be DK wool with no glitter. 15 cm or 6 inches square and have the ends sewn in please. More squares always welcome – there is DK wool in the box in church.

September – Lighting your home
- Turn your lights off when you’re not using them. If you switch a light off for just a few seconds, you will save more energy than it takes for the light to start up again, regardless of the type of light. energysavingtrust.org.uk/home-energy-efficiency/energy-saving-quick-wins
- If you have lights in your garden use solar powered lights that charge during the day and don’t require electricity.
Floodlighting
We are still having problems with the floodlighting due to a electrical fault. We are unable to take any floodlighting requests until this has been rectified. We will let you know when this has been sorted.
Funeral of Bridget Awre
Bridget’s funeral will take place on Monday 2nd October in Church at 11am and afterwards at the Fox and Hounds everybody is welcome. If you’re attending the funeral then please feel free to wear bright colours! Please continue to hold Mike and the family in your prayers.
