Trinity 16

TODAY

This Sunday we celebrate with Revd Chris as he presides at Holy Communion for the first time. We are delighted that after the ‘false start’ back in July Chris was finally ordained priest this Thursday on the Feast of Michael and All Angels. It is wonderful to have Chris and Sally and the family with us and as we continue to support and uphold them in prayer we ask that they will know the protection of God’s heavenly warriors.

The collect for Michaels and All Angels:

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted the ministries of angels and mortals in a wonderful order:

grant that as your holy angels always serve you in heaven, so, at your command, they may help and defend us on earth;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Mask wearing in church

The current PCC policy requesting that masks continue to be worn in church has been updated to recognise individual choice so that mask wearing will now be advisory only, providing that the president and chalice assistants will continue to wear masks during the distribution of Holy Communion. As Covid 19 has not disappeared, the situation will be kept under review.

Real Living Wage

As part of its mission the PCC seeks to transform unjust structures of society and has for many years paid its employees at or more than the Real Living Wage set by the Living Wage Foundation. However this has little impact if we do not publicise it.  We have therefore recently registered with the Living Wage Foundation and we now a Living Wage Employer.

Church at 4 – open meeting

For a number of years Church at 4 has offered a more contemporary style Sunday service at 4pm in the Church Hall. This has attracted a younger congregation and so it has also been the primary place where we have engaged with families with children. Unfortunately a combination of circumstances has seen attendance fall from an average of around 30 people in 2018 to just 10 in 2022. We have lost the ‘critical mass’ that makes children’s work feasible and consequently we no longer attract people with children. Many of the people who come to this service have already been to church at 10am.

As a wider church community, we need to reflect on two key questions:

What is the purpose of Church at 4? (Is it simply an opportunity for church members to enjoy a different style of worship?)

What is our approach to engaging with and discipling younger generations of Christians?

There will be an opportunity to discuss these questions and share ideas at 11:45 on Sunday 23rd October. This meeting will be held IN CHURCH after the 10am service and it is hoped that as many people as possible will contribute. Please come and share your thoughts, whether or not you have ever been to Church at 4 yourself.

Filling Station

From the clients and trustees of The Filling Station, a huge thank you to all concerned for the really generous harvest donations. A great deal of thought has obviously gone into the choosing of your very suitable gifts. Some of the items will have been out in the van by the time you read this!

Thank you, as ever to the van packers, drivers, sandwich makers and donors on whose help we depend throughout the year.  Andrew Bond

Men’s Group

The next meeting of the Men’s Group is scheduled for Saturday 22nd October, and weather permitting, will be a local walk staring at 8.45 am. The Group is an informal gathering of Christian men for discussion, and with a willingness to assist local individuals in need of practical help (though our artisan skills may be a little limited!)

The Group is keen to widen its local membership and newcomers are welcomed. If you are interested, please contact Mike Mason via  masonmj@ntlworld.com or 07899 041596.’

Join in the mission

On Saturday 29th October from 11am to 1pm we will be having a Pumpkin Party in the Church Hall. This is a family event for the village as an alternative to Halloween and the organisers need more people to make it work. There will be crafts, games and food. All the craft and games will be set up but we need people to oversee them and we need people in the kitchen to set out food make drinks and wash up.  No special skills are needed but a willingness to chat would be good.  There is a sign-up list in church and nearer the time we will be asking for volunteers to supply some of the food.  Barbara

A plea from those who wear hearing aids:

Several people with hearing aids have mentioned some difficulty in hearing lessons etc. even with the loop system. Would those using the lectern and pulpit mikes please stand directly in front of them and adjust the height.

RAINGARDEN AND PLANTERS

Most of the work to set up the rain garden and planters at the church hall is now complete, and we need to plant them up. We intend to get together on a Saturday afternoon later this month to start the job, but first we need some plants! We will have to buy some, particularly where we need very specific things, but hope that we can obtain some for free.

So….gardeners- are you lifting and dividing any herbaceous perennials this autumn? Have you successfully grown some cuttings?

If you have anything that might be useful, please contact Joan Orman, after 10am service or on joan.orman@btinternet.com

Traidcraft

I am hoping to sell Traidcraft on Sunday October 2nd at Church. If you think you may want to order please look at the website as I haven’t been able to get catalogues this year. Thank you, Sally Parker

We will be holding another art workshop entitled ‘A brush with the Divine, which is a repeat of the one’s held in the summer.  If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Chris Offord (delniart@gmail.com) or collect a leaflet from the back of church.

Vote for the National Trust to stop banking with Barclays

It’s ironic that Europe’s largest conservation charity banks with Europe’s largest bankroller of climate changing fossil fuel emissions! Christian climate campaigners have tabled a resolution for November’s AGM of the National Trust. It calls on the Trust to cease banking with Barclays if the bank fails to adopt a radical policy of fossil fuel divestment. If you’re a National Trust member, please vote for the NT to cease banking with Barclays Bank. Voting papers will be in the autumn magazine – you can easily vote online or by post.  A vote for the Resolution is a vote for the Trust’s strategy: “For everyone and For ever” A large response will send a loud and clear message, so please let friends and family know. Thank You.

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

October – What’s on the menu?

  1. Think about your food before it reaches your table. 45% of the carbon emissions from food comes from production (on the farm), 28% in food processing, 7% in packaging and 19% from transport. Home grown has the lowest carbon footprint!
  2. Learn how to cook a new vegetarian or vegan meal each week. Why? Switching to plant based protein is better for your health and carbon budget. 1kg weight: beef/lamb 19kg CO2e (cows and sheep burp methane); chicken 4.5kg CO2e; beans 2kg CO2e; and lentils 0.9 kg CO2e.

Funerals

We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have, died recently Frederick Hanratty, Jack Mapstone, Peter Wylie, Susan White and Monica Matthews.  We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

Floodlighting

The Church will be floodlit on Wednesday 5th October by Mrs Edmonds in memory of her husband, Roy Edmonds who died on 5th October 2014.
