Mike Durston and Eric Barrett

We were sad to hear of the death of Mike Durston and Eric Barrett this week.  Mike as many of you know was our Sexton for many years and kept our Churchyard tidy he was also Church Warden when Eric Woods was our Vicar.  Eric Barrett was a long term member of the village.  Our prayers are with both families at this time.

CHURCHES COUNT ON NATURE

On Saturday 3rd June we will be carrying out a wildlife survey of the churchyard. We have carried out surveys for the last two years and submitted our results to the National Biodiversity Network to be included in their maps. There will also be pebble painting and leaf printing activities for children, so everyone whether adults, budding ecologists or children of any age are welcome. Come along from 2pm to join in. There will be drinks and cake as well.

Upper Churchyard Working Party

Thank you to those who’ve already volunteered to help with maintenance of the upper churchyard.  There will be a Working Party on the morning of  Saturday 17th June, from 9am. Everyone is welcome, even if you do not wish to help on a regular basis. The more hands the better!   Homemade cake and tea/coffee will be provided.  Please bring tools and wear suitable clothing and footwear.  Many thanks.  Helena Thomas

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

June – Holiday highlights

  1. Going for a day out to the beach? Take a bag in your pocket and pick up any litter you see.
  2. Planning your day out or holiday journey? Use public transport if you can to reduce your carbon emissions. Travelling by train or ferry to Europe can be part of the adventure.

Legge House

Many of you will now be aware that the Trustees of the Wroughton Youth and Adventure Charity, the organisation which operates from Legge House, have made the very painful decision to close the charity. This is due to a number of factors, but most significantly:

  • The condition of Legge House and how much money needs to be spent to bring it to the standard properly required for the continuation of the charity’s work.
  • The ongoing financial situation following the Covid-19 pandemic, during which period we have not seen business rise to pre-2020 levels.
  • Rising costs, including staffing (due to the rise in the statutory minimum wage) and other costs (such as insurance, energy bills and maintenance).
  • Increasing levels of cancellations. This means frequently it has looked as if enough business will be generated, only for groups to cancel and to impact financial viability.

It is incredibly sad that we have had to make this decision and it is one the Trustees would not have made if we did not feel it is now the only viable option. We are also very proud of the efforts that have kept Legge House operational for so long. Particular credit goes to Mark and Sheila Tubey, and their predecessors Chris and Sue Offord, for all their hard work. Mark and Sheila have worked tirelessly since their arrival 12 years ago and deserve enormous thanks for everything they have done. We also want to thank the many volunteers who have supported Legge House over many years.

The process of closure will take some months. We will continue to work hard to do the best by the staff of Legge House and by its clients until the process is complete.

Once the closure is complete, ownership of the building will revert to the Diocese of Bristol. If you have any thoughts about how this asset could be used in the future, please speak to Revd. Phill regarding this. Please join us in prayer for Legge House, the dissolution of the Wroughton Youth and Adventure Charity and what we can do in the future.

Thank you

The Trustees of the Wroughton Youth and Adventure Charity
