The next Bishop of Swindon
The Venerable Neil Warwick, currently Archdeacon of Bristol, is to be the next Bishop of Swindon, Downing Street announced on Thursday. Ven Neil has served as Archdeacon of Bristol, responsible for three populous deaneries across the vibrant and diverse city of Bristol, since 2019. Neil is married to Helen and has two grown-up children. He loves collecting jazz on vinyl; going to gigs; and shouting at Nottingham Forest games! The Bishop of Swindon will be consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday 30th November at 11am. Ven Neil succeeds the Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, following his retirement earlier this year.

Upper Churchyard Volunteers – further working party dates
Thank you to everyone who’s been helping with maintaining the upper churchyard ….. it’s really appreciated and we are beginning to see results! However, this is the growing season so the work never stops…. ! Please join us if you can on Tuesday 29th August from 6pm by the garage/workstore, to help out for a couple of hours. Tea & cake available as usual! We’re still short of equipment so it’s useful if you can bring tools, broom, strimmer etc. If you can’t make those dates but want to help, then there is now a key safe for access to the garage/workstore – where you will find equipment & a work plan. Please speak to Helena at church or contact on 07909 882150 …… helenaxthomas@hotmail.co.uk
Shine-holiday fun day
Just wanted to thank you all again for supporting the Holiday club last week. It was a great success and we are looking forward to doing something similar again next year. As a child holiday club was such an important part of my summers so much so that our holidays had to be booked around it so I could go and I am so pleased it is back up and running after Covid and to be a part of it now. I believe it to be such an important part of our outreach and ministry to the children in Wroughton and it was so good knowing we had the church supporting us in this comeback year both practically and in your prayers. Many thanks again, Hannah Wrixon
Revd Chris update
From the start of September Revd Chris will be taking up the part-time role of Curate in Charge of the Benefice of Wanborough and Liddington, Bishopstone with Hinton Parva. This is a half-time role and in the other half of his time he will continue as our Curate here in Wroughton and Wichelstowe. His primary focus will be on supporting and guiding the four villages through a continuing long vacancy. It’s great that Chris is now ready to take this step and that he can begin to ‘fly solo’ – this experience is part of his training and will stand him in good stead for the future. Revd Phill.
Open the Book
As you may know we have teams of people who go into Wroughton Infants, and East Wichel Primary to read and act out Bible stories for the children. Over the last year or so we have lost some of our team and so we are looking for some new people to join us. At the moment we are not being required to go into the schools too often and both schools are preferring Mondays at the moment (at different times of day) but this may change. If you could spare some time (less than an hour) to be part of our team, could be an emergency extra, or want to know more, please let Revd. Barbara Abrey or Joan Orman know.
Community Engagement
Being visible in the community is a vital part of our mission to Wroughton and Whichelstowe. The Community Engagement group like to be present at village events, like The Duck Race and Carnival as well as putting on family events through the year. This is about the whole community, not just children and families, so we would like as many people as possible to come up with ideas and organise events. If you would like to contribute in any way you can come onto our WhatsApp group. You will find out what is going on and be able to volunteer for the things that interest you. If you think you could contribute in any way please speak to Joan Orman, Carolyn Kirk, or Revd. Barbara Abrey.
Wiltshire Historic Churches Ride and Stride 2023
Advance notice that this year’s event where sponsored cyclists, horse riders and walkers can visit local churches in aid of the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, is to take place on Saturday 9th September 2023.
If you are interested in taking part in this popular long-standing event that raises money to help maintain Wiltshire’s historic church buildings, please contact local organiser for the Parish, Mike Mason on email: masonmj@ntlworld.com
Are you First Aid Trained?
The PCC take the safety and welfare of worshippers seriously and are wondering if you have a valid First Aid / medical qualification? If so would you be willing to help in the unfortunate event of someone having an accident or medical incident in Church? You would be joining our existing team who need more members. There is no rota involved, just a case of knowing who to ask if anything should occur.
Please give your details to Mark Tubey (LLM & Safeguarding Officer), Lorna Robinson (PCC Secretary) or contact Janet in the Office.
Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation
August – In the car
- Change your car breakdown cover to a company that campaigns for better environmental transport measures, rather than being part of the road transport lobby eg Environmental Transport Association eta.co.uk
- In the car switch your engine off if you pull over or are stuck in traffic for even a minute. It saves you fuel, reduces the nitrous oxide pollution for you and those around you and cuts noise pollution.
Phil & Sylvie Good
We have been informed that Phil and Sylvie Good whom we have been supporting for a while will be leaving CMS in September and returning to the UK from Lebanon. Please pray for them as they come back to England and transition into retirement. They have family links in Wiltshire. We will be prayerfully considering how best to focus our future Missionary support.
Funerals
We commend to God’s care and keeping those who have, died recently Michael Camden, Franklyn Alexander and Eric Archer. We pray for all those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

Newsletter of
THE FILLING STATION
feeding the hungry on the streets. Registered Charity No 1072429
July 2023
Dear Supporter,
With Covid controlled, we have returned to the normal routine….in part!
ACCOUNTS
Since our last newsletter in January, we have received a generous donation for our Designated Van fund. This now stands at £15K. and the van has just recently passed it’s MOT.
Each year we make a donation to the Salvation Army, who heat the soup and water each week, and to CGL who attend every Thursday to offer advice and support to Drug and Alcohol users.
When these the half year donations are made to these support organisations, our funds will be reduced to just £1,400.
In addition to the hot dogs, soup and sandwiches, we are currently only giving clients two tins, rather than the four we aim to provide, and even this cost around £120 per week.
So you can see, we need the Harvest Festival support from as many Churches and organisations as possible, which we recognise is difficult as food costs for all are increasing.
CLIENTS
The number of clients using the service are fairly stable. In the period April to June the average was 57 per week, up from 53 per week for the three months prior.
Swindon Borough Council outreach service has agreed to attend in the future, which is welcome support.
LEGGE HOUSE
We have been informed that Wroughton Youth Adventure Charity, who have run Legge House for many years, are ceasing to operate and are returning the lease they have on the building to the Bristol Diocese.
Since the running of the Filling Station relocated to be based, and supported, by Wroughton Parish Church we have had a licence to occupy one of the garages and to have a parking place, adjacent, for our van, for which we paid a minimum fee year. We have also been allowed to “plug in” the van, which needs to be “topped up” to start in winter, and to dispose of our rubbish in the bins.
We do not know who will operate the building from the Autumn, if any one, so we feel a little unsettled. Hence the request! Do you know of a garage, with power, and adjacent parking place for a large transit that we could rent, or have a licence to occupy, if we have to leave Legge House?
OTHER
Martin Jones, a long time helper, has joined the Trustees, and we will be seeking another volunteer by the end of the year.
The project was visited by Chief Constable Catherine Roper in May and by the High Sheriff, Pradeep Bhardwaj, in July.
And finally, a big thanks to sandwich makers, soup pourers, van packers, drivers and quiet supporters & givers, all of whom, together, make the project work.
