The next Bishop of Swindon

The Venerable Neil Warwick, currently Archdeacon of Bristol, is to be the next Bishop of Swindon, Downing Street announced on Thursday. Ven Neil has served as Archdeacon of Bristol, responsible for three populous deaneries across the vibrant and diverse city of Bristol, since 2019. Neil is married to Helen and has two grown-up children. He loves collecting jazz on vinyl; going to gigs; and shouting at Nottingham Forest games! The Bishop of Swindon will be consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday 30th November at 11am. Ven Neil succeeds the Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, following his retirement earlier this year.

Altar Servers and Sidesperson Rota

If you have not received the new rota for Altar Servers or Sidespersons from October to December 2023 by email please speak to Jean Ford 522964.  We are still having problems with sending to gmail accounts.

A simple prayer…

‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.’ (cf Mark 9:24b)

Q: Do you have a bible at home?

Q: Is your bible a modern translation, written in contemporary English (i.e. not King James)?

If the answer to either of these questions is ‘no’, then please do take a bible from the pile on the pew next to the curtain into the choir vestry. These are all left-over from the closure of Legge House. If you need a large-print bible then there are two of these as well.

A muddy pile at the Church Hall!

People may have spotted a muddy pile in the Church Hall car-park. We have been digging the foundations for a replacement to the extension along the back of the building. When completed the new extension will replace the existing toilets and kitchen and allow us to create disabled accessible facilities, a new entrance and improved storage (which will release useable daytime space in the front ‘library room’). HOWEVER, we have no money! We need to dig the foundations now in order to secure our planning permission, but we won’t be able to proceed further without significant fundraising. Please speak to Revd Phill if you’d like more information.

Back to School

Please pray for Teachers, Support Staff and pupils as they return for the new academic year. We pray especially for the schools and pre-schools in our parish:

  • East Wichel Primary School and Nursery
  • The Deanery Church of England Academy
  • The Kingfisher Church of England Academy
  • The Ridgeway School and Sixth Form
  • Tick Tock Playgroup
  • Wroughton Infants and Junior School
  • Wroughton Preschool

WILLOW-BROOK GARDEN ANNIVERSARY EVENT

On Saturday 23rd September from 12 noon there will be an anniversary event at Willow-Brook Gardens, focussing on growing and eating seasonal food. Our church’s Eco group will be taking displays about our new gardens at the church hall, and others of our members will be helping with children’s activities. Do come along and support us .  If you have any unwanted gardening book or magaziness, suitable for beginners, that we could give away, please see Joan Orman.

Wiltshire Historic Churches Ride and Stride 2023

Advance notice that this year’s event where sponsored cyclists, horse riders and walkers can visit local churches in aid of the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, is to take place on Saturday 9th September 2023.

If you are interested in taking part in this popular long-standing event that raises money to help maintain Wiltshire’s historic church buildings, please contact local organiser for the Parish, Mike Mason on email: masonmj@ntlworld.com

Bookcase in Church

The bookcase in Church is now overflowing as Christian reading books have been transferred there from Legge House.  In 2012 The Diocese had been intending to use Legge as a local resource base for ministers, ordinands and lay although it never formally happened due to a change of leadership in The Diocesan Board of Education. Please feel free to take home and borrow.  Mark

Eco Top Tips – practical ways to take better care of God’s creation

September – Lighting your home

  1. Light bulbs! If the average household replaced all of their bulbs with LEDs, it would cost about £100 and save about £35 a year on bills. energysavingtrust.org.uk/home-energy-efficiency/energy-saving-quick-wins
  2. Use natural light when you can to save energy. Sit by the window. Decorate your hone in light colours to maximise natural light.

Newsletter of

THE FILLING STATION

feeding the hungry on the streets. Registered Charity No 1072429

July 2023

Dear Supporter,

With Covid controlled, we have returned to the normal routine….in part!

ACCOUNTS

Since our last newsletter in January, we have received a generous donation for our Designated Van fund. This now stands at £15K. and the van has just recently passed it’s MOT.

Each year we make a donation to the Salvation Army, who heat the soup and water each week, and to CGL who attend every Thursday to offer advice and support to Drug and Alcohol users.

When these the half year donations are made to these support organisations, our funds will be reduced to just £1,400.

In addition to the hot dogs, soup and sandwiches, we are currently only giving clients two tins, rather than the four we aim to provide, and even this cost around £120 per week.

So you can see, we need the Harvest Festival support from as many Churches and organisations as possible, which we recognise is difficult as food costs for all are increasing.

CLIENTS

The number of clients using the service are fairly stable. In the period April to June the average was 57 per week, up from 53 per week for the three months prior.

Swindon Borough Council outreach service has agreed to attend in the future, which is welcome support.

LEGGE HOUSE

We have been informed that Wroughton Youth Adventure Charity, who have run Legge House for many years, are ceasing to operate and are returning the lease they have on the building to the Bristol Diocese.

Since the running of the Filling Station relocated to be based, and supported, by Wroughton Parish Church we have had a licence to occupy one of the garages and to have a parking place, adjacent, for our van, for which we paid a minimum fee year. We have also been allowed to “plug in” the van, which needs to be “topped up” to start in winter, and to dispose of our rubbish in the bins.

We do not know who will operate the building from the Autumn, if any one, so we feel a little unsettled. Hence the request! Do you know of a garage, with power, and adjacent parking place for a large transit that we could rent, or have a licence to occupy, if we have to leave Legge House?

OTHER

Martin Jones, a long time helper, has joined the Trustees, and we will be seeking another volunteer by the end of the year.

The project was visited by Chief Constable Catherine Roper in May and by the High Sheriff, Pradeep Bhardwaj, in July.

And finally, a big thanks to sandwich makers, soup pourers, van packers, drivers and quiet supporters & givers, all of whom, together, make the project work.
